What Obama says publicly versus privately (e.g. with Netanyahu tomorrow morning) are two completely different things. That holds true of everyone in politics, hence the use of the word “political” to mean just that.
Anyone who is successful in an organization of any kind, understands the importance of politicking. Give the guy a break. He’s the first strong democratic leader we’ve seen in a long time. And don’t think for a moment that he actually expects the Israeli’s to return in full to the 1967 borders.
This is a giant Chess game and you are right...he is the king. And because he’s smart, he thinks twelve steps ahead of every move we see him take. Don’t focus on the individual pieces being moved, figure out the long-term strategies. It’s like purposely using poor grammar to fool your opponent into thinking you’re not very intelligent. He’s setting up the pieces. I suspect it’s the same approach he used in dealing with Pakistan. Man, were they ever surprised. Sure didn’t see that one coming now did they?
