Kofi Annan hits at west over Libya

Kofi Annan, the former UN secretary-general who has been courted by Muammer Gaddafi as a possible mediator in Libya, has criticised the leaders of the western coalition for complicating the chances of a settlement by demanding the dictator step down.

Mr Annan said Britain, the US and France were right to intervene to stop Colonel Gaddafi's tanks moving into the rebel-held eastern city of Benghazi. He also said that the Libyan dictator "eventually, probably . . . will have to go".

But he believes the coalition's calls for the end of Col Gaddafi's 41-year rule have inhibited the chances of this being negotiated at talks. He fears the west's actions have gone beyond the UN mandate and that, with the rebels "weak" and the coalition "not united", the war risks drifting into a "messy" stalemate.

Libya without Col Gaddafi in charge should not have been decreed as a war aim, but rather should have been addressed in negotiations, he believes. "This mantra of [Nicolas] Sarkozy, [David] Cameron and [Barack] Obama, saying 'Gaddafi must go' is not very helpful," he said, referring to the French, British and US leaders respectively.

60 days is tomorrow.

If you support Obama or not he MUST go to Congress.

Only Juan Mc Cain thinks he doesn't.

Kofi Annan needs to go home and go to sleep. Just like I do. Only difference is I’m tired and want to stop this stuff. What does he have now, or has ever had, to contribute to the rest of the world???

OK, so it’s ok for a semi black president to tell the republicans to get into the back of the bus, because they counter the liberal democratic rhetoric views??

Get Real!!
