(South Texas)Los Indios Still on Edge After Shootout Just Across Border

LOS INDIOS - The small community of Los Indios is on edge. They say the violence in Mexico is breaking out too close to home.

The Los Indios International Bridge is back open to traffic. It was shut down Wednesday afternoon after a reported shootout just across the border. Folks in this area are still shaken up.

Travelers like Alejandro Juarez are surprised by a gunbattle here. He and his family were trying to get into Mexico through what he considers one the border's calmest crossings.

“I think this is the safest way to go to Mexico because Valle Hermoso is right there, and it's the shortest. You can cross in five minutes or less,” says Juarez.

It was a longer wait Wednesday. The bridge closed for two hours as Mexican helicopters patrolled the violence below.

Bob Martinez has lived his whole life here in Los Indios.

“There were some small explosions but mostly two helicopters. We could see them through the tree tops,” says Martinez.

He says he heard gunfire from his house near the river. His neighbors tell us this is a sign things are getting out of hand across the border.

"The situation is uncontrollable. There's nothing that can be done about it," says Mateo Mayorda, a Los Indios resident.

Martinez feels the same.

“You don't know who is coming or who you're going to be approached by,” says Martinez.

He says he's not afraid. He only hopes gunbattles across the river don't start becoming the norm in their peaceful border town.

Even though the shootout is reportedly over, CBP officials say they'll still have a tactical team out as a precautionary measure. There was no word Wednesday night on the number of injuries in Mexico.

Living in south TX I have heard so many stories from ranchers, many more than are reported.

I think the feds just want to drive all private-property ranch owners off the border so the illegals and drug guys can cross at will. What else could a person think?

But, but the system is working and the border is more safe now than ever.

So, has 0bama sued the town for defending itself yet?

Has Hilary brought the town up before the World Tribunal for ungood CrimeThink?

Has Calderon scolded us yet for “not treating his people better than our own?”

There has got to be a lot of corruption on this side of the border as well as the Mexican side. Just think of all those greedy politicians looking for their share of the action. I too suspect that they (criminals on both sides of the border, including dirty pols) want to drive the ranchers out to clear the way for drug and human trafficking. Did you notice how they put up those signs keeping visitors out of the park lands in Arizona? They are also keeping the Border Patrol out of there as well. How convenient for the traffickers. Just keep the future Democrat voters and the drug money rolling in.
