What would be the best gun for protection from the zombies?

Shotguns. Lethal at close range, and unless you already live in farm country close range and in the dark is likely to be where most of the fighting goes on. They can punch holes in vehicles especially with deer slugs. Buckshot can sweep stairs and hallways without having to expose yourself to take careful aim. The ammo is cheap easy to get. So if you have to bug out and can't take the entire stash in the basement along you can probably restock once you find a new bolt hole.

And gun grabbing liberals don't think of them as dangerous in the same way as a black plastic assault rifle. They won't mark you out as a "Dangerous Militia" type. You might be one, but you don't want the "Zombies" to know that.

I disagree. Zombies have to be shot through the head, so the scatter power of shotguns is not an advantage. The range of a light rifle is an advantage. I would recommend a bullpup .223 like the Steyr AUG. It is effective at all ranges and the quick acquisition scope gets em right between the eyes.
