There is NO light rail system in America that is even close to self-sufficent:
- Boston recovers nearly 60% of its costs from fares
- The national average is 25%
- Houston recovers 10% (the lowest)

I rarely see any passengers on the new Austin, TX rail. Have you noticed how Cap Metro has gone to counting the number of "boardings" now? Get on at Leander, get off at one of the other stations, get back on and go all the way downtown and get off again. One passenger but four boardings.
