When the news of IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn ("DSK")'s arrest for attempted rape came out, many of the noises coming out of France was that it was a national embarrassment.
And of course it is. Tabloids are making great headlines out of DSK's Frenchness and taste for women.
But the real national embarrassment for France is the response of its elites.
First came the two-faced appeals to the sacred "presumption of innocence" by French politicians on both sides of the aisle. DSK rival and self-proclaimed women's advocate Ségolène Royal extended her thoughts to DSK and his family for going through a very hard time, but did not have a word for the maid, for whom one suspects the past few days haven't been all roses.
The "presumption of innocence" was turned into a presumption of culpability of the accuser. Much ink was poured over how awful it is for DSK. And since DSK must be presumed innocent, not a word was spared to worry about the maid and her family, who are going through a hard time.

So yeah, the guy is depraved adn puts his pants on one leg at a time, like all guys.
Still, this is a distraction for the media. The media should really be attempting to unravel why the leader of the free world releases false birth documents, hides his records, lies about having obliterated Osama, refuses to cut spending etc. And as well, why the Republican “party” won’t field a real candidate for President.
I thought that in the French legal sytem one is guilty ‘til proven innocent. From Napoleon’s Code?
It seems that Strauss-Kahn talks the Socialist talk, but is seen driving Porches and staying in $3,000 a night hotel suites.
I assume that a caviar Socialist is the same as Rush Limbaugh's Limousine Liberal.
Good article. This “outrage” over the treatment of the rapist while ignoring the pain and humiliation of the victim is typical of the European elites. It reminds me of the treatment of WJC by some. Well, they are all millionaire socialists.
Just to be clear, that’s a pic of Ségolène Royal, not the maid. Ségolène looks good for 57.
The fact is, in the US the SOB is considered innocent until proven guilty. They don’t need to cuff him.
Technically, her accusations are simply allegations at this point. Is she in the hospital? Not that I’ve heard. So all this nonsense about who to feel sorry for is just that: Nonsense. IF it can be proved, this slob is going to prison, but that is a big IF and the press has NO RIGHT to try him.
He should be treated no different than some ghetto thug arrested in the South Bronx.
Ségolène is guilty of being not guilty, so her opinion might be questionable.
Yeah, well, I have seen a lot of prisoners and some are chained up and some not.
Like I care what a bunch of depraved, degenerate surrender monkey elites care about our justice system?
Hey Nifong, I am surprised you have money for a PC and internet. Or are you writing from a public library?
Some animals are more equal than others.
The press has every right to try him. We have every right to make up our own minds. We just can’t punish him. That is the exclusive right of the State. That is why THEY, but not us, have to bend over backwards to prove the charges.
The state apparently has physical evidence AND circumstantial evidence (why was he in such a hurry to get out of there?)
They had good reason to handcuff him. When they caught him on the plane about to take off for France he resisted arrest.
Oh, I see the error of my ways. The woman was obviously an African whore. What was I thinking. Such an important man would never do such a thing. Oh the humiliation of the perp walk for such an important white man. The horror of it all!!!
Have not heard anything out of Sarkozy. I’m guessing he and Carla are on a 3 day martini binge. Re-election is in the air. LOL!
