Q&A On The Veterans Disarmament Act -- How the new law will affect you and where we go from here January 8, 2008 GOA
But it was then, with most of the Congress gone, that the House and Senate passed the Veterans Disarmament Act without a recorded vote. It was a huge deja vu, as this was the method that a previous Democratic Congress used -- together with compliant Republicans -- to pass the original Brady Law in 1993.
Never happens and I go the Va in Salem, Virginia for injuries from Viet-Nam. Nice hospital and staff.
Or found under Public Law 110-180
Who’s not stressed these days? And what if the person really IS threatened? Just cause you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you.
Just wait until they change the question to catch more people in their net.
This is the second shoe to drop the first is the push to close the non-existent gun show loophole and feral oversight over every transaction involving the second amendment.
I go to the hospital on ft Leonard Wood Army Post
they always ask me
1 have you fallen in last 3 days
2 do you feel safe at home
3 do you feel like hurting yourself or anyone else
Not sure what happens if I answer yes to any of them.
But they do ask.
"Physician, screw thyself!"
That's fine if there's several irrelevant questions and you answer them all that way, but if there's only a firearms one, they'd probably interpret that as "Yes".
My answer?
"No, I don't feel ssfe at home, because I keep falling, and it makes me want to kill you, then myself."

Coburn Amendment: Veterans’ Second Amendment Rights
Senator Coburn has proposed a first-degree amendment (#3700 - link) to the Health Care Reconciliation Bill, H.R. 4872, to ensure that no veterans be denied their Second Amendment rights without due process. This amendment is identical to S. 669, the Veterans 2d Amendment Protection Act.

REPUBLICAN PRESS RELEASE
June 26, 2008
Burrs Veterans Second Amendment Protection Act Approved By Senate Panel
Currently, when the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA) appoints a fiduciary to assist a veteran with managing their financial affairs, VA also deems the veteran mentally incompetent and reports him or her to the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). The Veterans Second Amendment Protection Act would require a judicial body to deem a veteran, surviving spouse, or child as a danger to himself or others before being listed in NICS, which would prohibit the veteran from being able to purchase certain firearms. The legislation is supported by the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, AMVETS, and the Military Order of the Purple Heart.

S. 669:
Veterans 2nd Amendment Protection Act
A bill to amend title 38, United States Code, to clarify the conditions under which certain persons may be treated as adjudicated mentally incompetent for certain purposes.
This bill never became law. This bill was proposed in a previous session of Congress. Sessions of Congress last two years, and at the end of each session all proposed bills and resolutions that haven’t passed are cleared from the books. Members often reintroduce bills that did not come up for debate under a new number in the next session.

It would seem like this is an issue but it also appears as though it hasnt been passed, so it might still be a problem.
I took my father in to the SLC VA hospital. They did ask the first two questions. The third was slightly different, asking if he ever felt like hurting himself. He was under extreme emotional stress which was obvious to the admitting clerk.
This isn’t isolated to the VA. I was in the ER at John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek, CA recently and I was asked the very same questions. The ER gambit is a real set up, because generally when you are in the ER, it’s not for a hangnail. The best advice I can give is bite your lip and give them very calm, deliberate negative answers. I don’t think it’s even wise to confront them on these questions, because you have no way of knowing how they will interpret your remarks and report them. Just another group, like cops and firemen, with whom you want to have very limited conversations if any at all.
FYI folks, IIRC a friend of mine got a series of similar questions when she was in the hospital for the delivery of her baby. So its not just a VA thing.
I think they are afraid someone will go postal on them.
You know, I have been saying for some time that it’s NOT the “Spirit of ‘76” that we need to reignite. It’s the “Spirit of ‘75”, that led to ‘76.
It’s about time that our government started fearing us, rather than us fearing them.
The next time there I’ll keep this in mind, and ask a few question.
Sounds like a HIPPA violation to me.
