Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) took a swipe Monday at Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich after the former House Speaker criticized hiss proposed Medicare reforms.
"With allies like that, who needs the left?" Ryan told guest host Raymond Arroyo on conservative talker Laura Ingraham's radio show.
Ryan, the chairman of the House Budget Committee, defended his 2012 budget proposal that includes significant reforms to Medicare.
Gingrich on Sunday distanced himself from Ryan's plan, which would transform the program into a voucher-based system for Americans under the age of 55.
"I don't think right-wing social engineering is any more desirable than left-wing social engineering," Gingrich said of Ryan's plan on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday. "I don't think imposing radical change from the right or the left is a very good way for a free society to operate."
Ryan strongly disputed Gingrich's description of his plan, which House Republicans approved last month.
"Hardly is that social engineering and radical," he said. "What's radical is kicking the can down the road."
Ryan, who's considering running for the Senate in Wisconsin, refused to say that Gingrich's criticism should disqualify him for the GOP presidential nomination.
"I'm not going to get into any of that," he said.
“With allies like that, who needs the left?”

How politically incorrect of him!
Excellent.
I use to really like Newt, a lot, but, lately, not so much.
What I find thoroughly amazing about this, is he just announced on, what, Wednesday I think, his presidential candidacy. He then torpedoes his campaign on the following Sunday morning. I never thought he had any chance at all, but this is just bizarre. Doesn't he have a campaign manager?
Newt left the Conservative reservation a long time ago. It seems like for the last couple years this fat, gas bag Gingrich has been saying stupid stuff for his media buddies and then heading on the Hannity to “clarify” his leftist remarks. He has to be the weakest candidate we got other than Johnson.
Callistandeye has destroyed himself a couple of times in just one week. Really, Ron Paul’s endorsement of heroin is a ho-hum disaster set alongside Callistandeye’s implosion at the starting gate . . .
Reminds me of McCain in 2008. Almost seems like he is working for the other side.
Way to go, Newt!!!
I became disillusioned with Newt when he started hawking BS adverts in his emails (End of America being one of them).
This tells me all I need to know. If Newt is for the man-made Global Warming scam, then he is a Leftists. Nobody with any common sense would support that nonsense.
How does Newt explain the ice caps on Mars shrinking? Are we Globally Warming the entire solar system, or could it be normal cyclical changes in the sun(Sol)? Naah, it must be us. And if we would just stop being stupid and give Algore his million billion dollars, he can change the entire atmosphere of the Earth and change the whole Universe! He is SuperMan!
If Newt supports GW, he is a Globalist and Left. There is no in between about that.
Newt is play for the left. He has been for some time.
I have always thought Newt was a good speaker, and did articulate conservative positions well.
but why, in his first day in the campaign, would Gingrich attack the ONLY person, right or left, who has a comprehensive plan for the deficit????? what the heck is he thinking?
Exactly, he’s done in my mind even before he ever really got a start. Him and Mitt can go fly a kite.
I guess the RINOs want Obamalamadingdong for another 4 years.
As far as I can tell, almost all of the GOP, Newt included, is the enemey.
I am not even remotely considering voting for this fool.
What a waste of time.
Newt has neutered himself.
I’m with you - don’t understand why Newt would take such a position - he’s toast.
And just like that, Newt’s slim chance of winning the nomination is already gone. His time has passed. Newt’s an idea windbag but can’t stay focused on any one issue and is all too happy to ally himself with the left on things like global warming, etc.
