Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) took a swipe Monday at Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich after the former House Speaker criticized hiss proposed Medicare reforms.
"With allies like that, who needs the left?" Ryan told guest host Raymond Arroyo on conservative talker Laura Ingraham's radio show.
Ryan, the chairman of the House Budget Committee, defended his 2012 budget proposal that includes significant reforms to Medicare.
Gingrich on Sunday distanced himself from Ryan's plan, which would transform the program into a voucher-based system for Americans under the age of 55.
"I don't think right-wing social engineering is any more desirable than left-wing social engineering," Gingrich said of Ryan's plan on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday. "I don't think imposing radical change from the right or the left is a very good way for a free society to operate."
Ryan strongly disputed Gingrich's description of his plan, which House Republicans approved last month.
"Hardly is that social engineering and radical," he said. "What's radical is kicking the can down the road."
Ryan, who's considering running for the Senate in Wisconsin, refused to say that Gingrich's criticism should disqualify him for the GOP presidential nomination.
"I'm not going to get into any of that," he said.
I’m liking Ryan better all the time. My opinion of Newt remains unchanged.
You won’t have to wait for Hannity. Newt out did himself already this morning.
more status quo of mixed economy economics and politics of pragmatism, eclecticism, and opportunism.
” I use to really like Newt, a lot, but, lately, not so much. “ ===============
Oh, yeah, me too. I wanted everybody’s voice in and thought I could depend on Newt as a mouthpiece for the Right. Now, for all to see he aims for the mushy middle to expand his base? Ick.
Nothing he says from now on can restore an ounce of trust after this arrow into the heart of a serious plan. Ethenol promoting, global warming, elbows with Nancy and Hillary is not the path to the trust reserve of the conservative Right.
I got caught supporting a stinker entering the race. Embarrassing.
I keep wondering what Newt and Onada know that I don’t. Seems like they shoot themsleves in the foot every day, but don’t seem to care.
Newt is just bucking for RNC support.
He knows that the only way the RNC or the establishment Republicans (Rove) will support you is if you go as far, or farther, Left as Obama, Pelosi, and Reid.
The RNC/GOP is now officially a Leftist organization. They are not even ‘center’ anymore. I look for them to start putting MoveOn ads on their website any day now.
” The RNC/GOP is now officially a Leftist organization. They are not even center anymore. “ ==========
Here Rush is coming on and I can not wait to hear Limbaugh’s Institute go off on Newt!
“The RNC/GOP is now officially a Leftist organization. They are not even center anymore.”
Like my new tagline?
Well summarized.
Good bye Gingrich... Thanks again for confirming what I thought.
Gingrich is ONLY in this election for himself. I have heard, but cannot confirm if this is true or not. Gingrich is only in to get matching tax payer campaign funds. Technically he is suppose to pay it back, but for whatever reason. Politicians are never forced to pay it back. I honestly do not know if that is true or not. At the very same time I have never heard any politician going to jail for not repaying his campaign funds. Well at least in the last 15 years.
Yea, your right about that. I’ll never look at him the same again and I’ll never believe anything he says. He’s disappointingly just like the rest of the RINO’s.
Officially?? There many people that have been saying this for a while. There are still some good Republicans, but overall it’s a center left party. It’s no longer the party of Ronald Reagan.
He is trying to appeal to older pubbies and independents.
Completely agree.
I haven’t donated to the RNC since GWB, and I never will again.
Newt’s presidential aspirations should be allowed to “wither on the vine.”
They were always ‘Left leaning’, but now they seem to have gone completely off the deep-end.
So Newt’s strategy now becomes clear. He knows he can’t win running as a conservative, so in desperation he’s trying to be the voice of RINO moderates and independents.
That probably won’t get him very far in the primaries, but then again we said that about McCain in 2007.
He needs to try to win over Republicans first. Besides, taking on Ryan is insane - at this time. Its always surprised me how stupid generally smart people can be.
