Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Sunday that he strongly supports a federal mandate requiring citizens to buy health insurance a position that has been rejected by many Republicans, including several who likely will be running against him for the Republican presidential nomination.
Appearing on NBCs Meet the Press, Gingrich told host David Gregory that he continues to advocate for a plan he first called for in the early 1990s as a Congressman, which requires every uninsured citizen to purchase or acquire health insurance.

The candidates need real time to state their positions in one minute.

You tell me.
What he reportedly said:
Appearing on NBCs Meet the Press, Gingrich told host David Gregory that he continues to advocate for a plan he first called for in the early 1990s as a Congressman, which requires every uninsured citizen to purchase or acquire health insurance.
"Requires"..."every citizen"..."to purchase or acquire".
Sounds like an individual mandate to me -- i.e., government coercion.
Odd thing is, I don't recall his championing such a mandate at the time. But, now, he claims tht he did -- and I assume he's not lying.
C’mon genius boy child.
The overwhelming majority of the “political class” needs to be put out to pasture, IMO.
I don't see this country turning around for the better without a total collapse and a rebuild from the ground up, and although I don't see that happening anytime soon, I am having a hard time seeing another viable solution, but I sincerely hope I'm wrong with that sentiment.
Put down the crack pipe son!
Gingrich has long felt that each individual should be responsible for paying for their own healthcare. Some statistics indicate 1/3 of the uninsured live in household with incomes over %75000...he believes everyone should pay on a sliding scale with vouchers going to lower income types...that’s part of his solution...
I finally did. Whew, it’s hard to come down from a high like that. Give me a minute
If the individual mandate is struck down by the Supreme Court doesn’t that say Newt is off the rails
If the individual mandate is struck down by the Supreme Court doesn’t that say Newt is off the rails
If by drafted, you mean Christie, forget it. He is fine where he is. Appointing two shariah-oriented judges in NJ took the glow right off for me.
Of the ANNOUNCED candidates, I said it before. Santorum is a Conservative to the soles of his feet but I don’t think Santorum could win. Cain is a Conservative with good business sense, but that alone does not a president make, so I don’t think he can win either.
Daniels wants to skip social issues altogether, so no core values there.. Forget that.
Paul and Huntsman are just....loco. Let Huntsman go climb to Shangri La La and take Paul with him. The air would do him good.
I would have drafted Bolton during the LAST election, but he said no. Wouldn’t take him this time around unless there is nobody else.
I am Palin supporter all the way and my ticket would be Palin/West. I think she is far more formidable than most people give her credit for. And West takes no prisoners. That’s my ticket and I’m sticking to it unless something really, really drastic changes everything... like the world ends or something.
“Im not supporting Newt, but lets not distort what he said. He isnt exactly backing obamacare. Not even close.”

Here’s the problem; Newt also supports Comprehensive Immigration Reform, and he also buys into AGW (Remember his couch sitting with Nancy Pelosi?). The ramifications of this bogus science could potentially mean Cap & Trade for our country. This will spell bankruptcy for our nation. Sorry, but any person who buys into this bogus science, cannot be trusted.
In my opinion, the people here who are critical of Newt have good reason to be. The man is a RINO and CANNOT be trusted! 1994 was 1994. He is not the same man, and we are not the same country anymore.
In my mind, RINOs are more dangerous to this country than the Democrat/Socialist Party. At least we know where the Democrats stand on the issues. RINOs...you just never know.
What we NEED is a law that says if you dont have insurance and cannot otherwise pay, no healthcare provider (doctor, hospital, etc.) is obligated to treat you.
I kinda agree with this. At the very least they should have their visa card ready for payment or loan papers so the hospital or tax payers are not on the hook for it.
The Vampires have a strong team..
Why can't we consider how he *did* answer this morning on TV?
The only three that I see as good for America are West, Palin and Cain at this point in time.
Things change and another viable conservative could come around, but those three are the only ones I would consider voting for in 2012.
That’s my choice, too.....Palin / West.
A conservative woman and a conservative black is the ticket to send Obummer packing.
I have NO problem with individual responsibility. However, Obamacare mandates everything that has anything to do with healthcare. NO individual truly can have responsibility for their own healthcare when government commissions themselves as the controller and provider of all things healthcare.
I did not see it.
A group of conservative Congressmen and Pundits would pepper each candidate with questions about specific issues and legislation. The candidates would be forced to speak in detailed language about actual bills proposed with the people who will actually vote on them. They wouldn't be able to get away with vague generalities about very important issues.
Each candidate would have to run the gauntlet alone, but it would weed out the faint of heart, and whoever survived would be well prepared for debates with Dems.
