Much like Russia or China.. the people have never had, known or want freedom...
They have never had God given Rights but instead government allowed privileges..
The people of Russia, China and Egypt and the rest of the world including Europe don't know the difference between privileges AND rights..
Ben Stein missed all that.. How about you!..
Quite true. In fact, Egypt was the original fountainhead of the modern techniques of totalitarian government. In 305 A.D., having just established the Tetrarchy in which he voluntarily associated three other men in the imperial purple, the Roman Emperor Diocletian settled his court in Egypt. His peer, the Augustus Maximian, was in southern France. Their juniors, Caesars Constantius Chlorus (grandfather of Constantine) and Galerius, had simplified courts in their garrison towns nearer the frontiers of the Empire.
To support a military campaign in the East by Galerius against the Persians, Diocletian moved from Italy to Egypt. While there, he observed the very ancient Egyptian tax-collection machinery in action, and the labor-corvee which the temple priests imposed on the people through the local officialdom.
Diocletian copied the Egyptian techniques and ideas and generalized them thoughout the Empire. Those precepts are today the foundation of modern totalitarianism. The supremacy of the State, the untouchability of rulers, the dictation of the minutiae of life without appeal or redress are all the legacy of the Egyptian priesthood and what they taught the Pharaohs, the Ptolemies, and Diocletian.
