Urine has a lot of nitrates in it. During the Civil War Southern ladies donated theirs to have the nitrate distilled from it to make gunpowder.

I’ve always thought there could be a use for urine. There’s so much of it, and it’s so rich in organic compounds.

The logistics of dealing with it seem impractical though.

In colonial times, the runoff of stables and outhouse were collected. John Adams sent letters to his wife asking the ladies to make gunpowder. I am descended from a woman who was arrested for running guns and ammo during the revolution.
