INDIANAPOLIS -- When the Indiana Republican Party found itself in a bind this spring, unable to lock down a high-profile keynote speaker for its big annual fundraising dinner, it was Gov. Mitch Daniels himself who came up with the solution: He'd get his wife, Cheri, to do it.
It was a bold move, considering that she had never given a high-profile speech before and generally has been reluctant to step onto the political stage. At the same time, her husband has been pondering a 2012 presidential bid (pondering it for the better part of 18 months, in fact) and the potential candidate himself has hinted that Cheri's the one person who could stop him -- because she's been described as uncomfortable about the intrusion such a campaign would have on their lives.
In recent months, though, Cheri Daniels has been upping her appearances, and at the meticulously timed and well-choreographed dinner before a record audience of 1,100 on Thursday evening, she strode onto the stage in fire-engine red, hiding no more.

"We are a party of ideas, but more importantly a party that acts on ideas," he said, adding that in the Hoosier State, there were no forgotten towns or inner cities that are too bleak.
He has obviously given some thought to the area beyond Indiana's borders, too.
Daniels accepted an invitation from those 55 students to meet at a spacious bar several blocks away after the event; he sipped Woodford Reserve bourbon as he asked them about their own lives and families. In return, they asked him who he might like to tap as his vice presidential nominee if he runs.
Hypothetically, he told them, he'd like to pick Condoleeza Rice.

Mitch would be much better than Obama, obviously. I hope he runs.
Rush reported that Laura Bush has volunteered to mentor a reluctant Cheri Daniels in the fine art of being a First Lady. So it seems the GOP’s ruling class has already picked its candidate, as usual.
Some "truce."
That’s not setting the bar very high...
Mitch and Rice are both RINOs. nuff said
These are the little nuances that the Daniels supporters don’t notice — that he is obviously the choice of the Bush wing of the party.
You know, the wing that led to the 06 disaster and set the table for the 08 disaster and had nothing at all to do with the 2010 successes.
True. However, I hope my vote counts for so much more than, "anything but Obama."
Mitch is smoking wacky weed.
IIRC, She was also a foreign policy disaster.
Great choice Mitch.
It’s not American Idol, I don’t care a thing about any future “First Lady”, but I do endorse Condoleeza Rice....for the head of the NFL.
Wow.
That would certainly shake things up a bit.
Outstanding.
I wonder if his marriage will be an issue.
Cheri Daniels divorced Mitch and married another man for year in the 90’s. She then divorced that man and got back together with Mitch.
I don’t think it’s any of our business, but I’m certain it will be brought up.
IIRC Rice is fluent in Russian, extremely intelligent and in large part behind the collapse of the Soviet Union.
We’ll just have to disagree then.
What did I miss about Condi?
The MSM wants Daniels because badly they will love retelling his marriage story and they will love the optics. The MSM will have no qualms rolling out the short jokes and creating pictures of Daniels standing next to tall folks at unflattering angles. If Condi is to be VP she will have to start slouching and buy some more flats.
If Daniels thinks he can do it, we had better start testing him now by teasing him about his height. If he can overcome his shortcoming from his intramural competition with grace and aplomb, then maybe he has a chance. If not, the MSM will totally embarrass him.
It was. By you. Just a few moments ago.
no vote from me.
Don’t know about Condi, but the one who would be Chief Executive just signed a bill de-funding Planned Parenthood in IN, the first such action in a State.
Obama and Rats wants mitch daniels to run so they can run against “bush” one more time. daniels worked for bush 2 in mangement and office of budget. period!
