A homicide investigation is launched in Hidalgo County after the La Joya Police Chief is found dead in his patrol unit.

Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino told Action 4 News Chief Jose Del Angel was found with at least one gunshot wound to his chest around 9 o’clock Thursday evening at a vacant lot on Palm Shore Drive in La Joya.

The Sheriff said a passerby noticed an officer sitting in a unit not moving, and called 911.

An officer responded to the scene, and discovered his boss slumped over in his city issued vehicle near a vacant lot.

Texas Rangers, the Department of Public Safety, La Joya Police, Palmview and the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Department all arrived on the scene to secure the area.

We asked one person to describe the mood, and they could only say “somber”.

“Everyone is crying and in disbelief” said one onlooker.

Many in the law enforcement community are shock.

Action 4 News went to the La Police Department was told it was on “lockdown” by an officer, but an explanation was not given as to why.

Sheriff Trevino told Action 4 News at 11 p.m. they would be at the scene for at least five hours to gather evidence.

At this time, “we are investigating a homicide, until the evidence proves otherwise” said the Sheriff.

Two weeks ago, Action 4 News interviewed Chief Del Angel and the City Manager, because they adopted a new policy not to released raw video.

The City Manager did allude to the fact they’d received potential threats.

Chief Jose Del Angel has worked for the La Joya Police Department for at least five years. He leaves behind two children and a wife.

La Joya is a border town about 20 miles north west of McAllen. Police chifs just across the border have very short lives.........

Treviño said he would wait for the autopsy report to determine if the gunshots were self inflicted or caused by another individual. But authorities close to the investigation said they believe Del Angel took his own life.

Suicide by cartel = turned down an offer he couldn't refuse or didn't carry through on a deal. Sort of like suicide by cop.

I wonder if Obama will show up at the Funeral and make some of his hilarious Moat and Alligator jokes.

May God Bless the Sheriff and his Family.

Why would a 911 call need to be made. Don’t all police radio in their whereabouts when they stop to check something? Shouldn’t they have known he was there and not responding?

Quote from another site: "Treviño said he would wait for the autopsy report to determine if the gunshots were self inflicted or caused by another individual. But authorities close to the investigation said they believe Del Angel took his own life."

Gunshots? Is this poorly written or a direct quote or a misstatement? If not I doubt that the gunshots (plural) were self-inflicted.

There is something else strange about this case. Police said they were looking for the chief since 9:30AM. A citizen reported seeing him slumped in his car 11 hours later.

Wikipedia says there are less than 3,500 people living in La Joya. I have never been there, but in a town that small I think you could cruise EVERY STREET in less than a couple of hours. How hard were they looking for him? Was there no locator on his car or his cell phone?

Poorly written?
