With all of the 7, 8, and 9 magnitude quakes in the South Pacific Rim, we tend to lose track of the fact that, in the right circumstances, even mag-5 shakes can be pretty devastating...

A 5.3 Earthquake would not even knock over dishes in California. They must have some pretty lousy building codes in Spain.

Actually Bendandi's prediction was misinterpreted. According to an institute in Italy, the location was never predicted and there were about 5 days in May discussed. She thought that maybe the 11th was focussed on since so many tragedies have occurred on the 11th. Anyway, the press focused on that day and on Rome and it spiraled bit over the deep end.
I'll try and locate the exact information.

This was a very shallow quake - can be very vicious at the epicenter without attenuation by depth.
