AP-Gfk poll: Obama approval hits 60 percent

President Barack Obama's approval rating has hit its highest point in two years — 60 percent — and more than half of Americans now say he deserves to be re-elected, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll taken after U.S. forces killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.

In worrisome signs for Republicans, the president's standing improved not just on foreign policy but also on the economy, and independent Americans — a key voting bloc in the November 2012 presidential election — caused the overall uptick in support by sliding back to Obama after fleeing for much of the past two years.

With a sampling of 46D, 29R and 4I, it’s a bogus poll, however, Obama is still going to be extremely difficult to take down in 2012.

The economy is horrific, unemployment steadily awful with no sign of improvement, gas is so expensive that people are being forced to change their lifestyles as a result, the world is a complete mess, he's a nasty, nasty creepy narcissist who derides everyone who disagrees with him....

You and I and other conservatives get all that... but America has a stunningly dumbed-down presidential year electorate. This includes many of whom are either OK with the economic conditions or too are disinterested and detached from reality to understand how and why Obama`s policies are detrimental to the country. Way too many vote on emotions.. Obama captivated people and massaged those emotions into a forming a “bond” with him.

I think the 'bonds' have been broken with a lot of people, Scott. Maybe it's just anecdotal, but there are lots of people saying that they had no idea who he was when they voted for him, and that they regret it.

A local political figure in our area said that the economy is worse here than it's ever been, and many, many people have given up looking for jobs. It's really dismal.

I just don't think he can fool his way out of this one. He's going to keep blaming Bush for what he 'inherited,' but things were good under Bush and people remember that.

I just don't think there's any reason to be a pessimist right now.

We just need to come up with a very strong candidate, and we'll beat this punk. I KNOW it.

The election meme is going to be "This is such a mess that you need to keep me for another four years so we can finish the TRANSFORMATION you elected me to perform. Bush left me a huge mess, much bigger than we originally estimated"

The question is - how many voting idiots will go along with this BDS? We know 95% of the blacks will stick with him, I suspect his "rhetoric" (and nothing will materialize) on Comprehensive Amnesty will sway the illegals to vote for him, all the union members will be with him. Gee with such a stellar RNC communications effort (/sarc) that doesn't leave too many voters for a GOP Pres.

I get what you`re saying, and I agree that`s the way it should be. But 0bama has some major structural advantages... a more-slanted-than-ever media, huge funding advantages, and a populace that is increasingly dependent on government largesse ... not to mention locked-down, permanent support from minorities Exacerbating all this is a VERY weak GOP field..

Trust me. I understand.

I just think that it's way too early to be giving up. Obama now has a record, and it's a bad one. It's different than it was in '08.

I have a theory - it's a spiritual one, so I may be wrong, of course - that God isn't quite finished with America yet. I truly believe we can't survive four more years of Obama (and in that I am a fellow pessimist), but I believe that God has had His hand on this dear country through some really rough times before and I believe, that if we pray and work, that God will honor our efforts to salvage this country and remove Obama.

We're in a literal civil war - only unlike the first one, both sides are not made up of good guys.
