It’s just a myth. Not a habit, not a standard, not a common practice, etc.

It's a myth that mainly originates from the movie "Braveheart." It WAS a practice during pagan times, but it ended when the British Isles were converted to Christianity, it was used in the movie as a device to make the movie more dramatic.
