South Carolina on Friday executed a man who strangled his cellmate, using a new combination of lethal injection drugs for the first time.
Jeffrey Motts, 36, was declared dead at 6:17 p.m. He was given the sedative pentobarbital instead of sodium thiopental as part of the lethal three-drug combination because federal agents seized the state's supply as part of a nationwide investigation into whether prisons obtained the drugs legally from England.
Motts was sentenced to death for killing his cellmate at a state prison in Greenville County in 2005. He was already serving a life sentence for killing two elderly people during a Spartanburg County robbery in 1995.
Motts, strapped to a gurney in a green jumpsuit, never looked at the witnesses. It took him about 90 seconds to stop breathing after the lethal drugs began flowing through an IV. He took several heavy breaths, blinked and his head jerked slightly for about a minute before his breaths became shallow and eventually stopped.
His eyes slowly closed, never to open again.
His attorney read a last statement before he died: "To my mom and grandma, happy Mother's Day. I know this is a sad one but let us remember the good times. I am finally free and at peace in heaven."
He apologized to his victims' families, his own family and anyone he hurt along the way.
Motts abandoned all his appeals and volunteered for the death chamber.

Isn’t phenobarbital highly addictive? Just saying here....lol!
They were trying to stop executions using that other drug.I for one vote for going back to hanging or some other sure fire way of execution...
Most sure fire way is, well, sure fire, a whole row of them.
They could always use copper leadodium. Its readily available and comes in a number of popular sizes including 9mm, 40 and 45 caliber. Apply topically and internally to the scalp.
He strangled his cellmate with a lethal drug injection for the first time? How exactly does one do that? And what makes them think he'll do it again?
Good grief. Poor sentence structure.
I was going to comment that rope is cheaper but I didn’t want to be cruel :)
Git r done!
Odd, the way people always talk as if they are going to heaven. In his case, I really do hope he repented for the murders he committed. Otherwise, he is in for a mighty warm surprise.
All the noise about which drug to use is stupid....a vet can put a dog down in 3 seconds and just continues to empty the syringe....but dogs deserve better than criminals.....
And eco friendly and reusable too.
And of course they can't offer him a cigarette or blindfold, smoking is illegal on public grounds and masks of any kind on adults are illegal in many municipalities.
We don't have journalists anymore. We don't even have writers anymore. All we have are scratchers. And all the editorial positions have been eliminated. Sad. Media death watch.
Why don’t they just give them an overdose of heroin? Nearly all criminals are drug users anyway; let them go out the way they live.
Heroin? Why, that’s not FDA approved, could be dangerous!
