It doesn't take much to imagine how ugly and awful the camp of Mohammed's followers was for a woman. That's why the Burka was invented. The veiling of women long predates Islam. It's purpose then and now was to control the competition for women. Middle Eastern cultures universally practiced polygamy and the need to reduce temptations among unmarried men is why they hid their wives and unmarried daughters.

If your wife is ugly, only you will know. And since you can't easily compare with the wives of your friends, you may not even notice that other men's wives are prettier.
