Police surrounded a mans house after one of his friends warned the cops that he might be suicidal. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your perspective) the guy was down the street at a bar watching the whole thing on TV.
The mayor is calling it a very expensive ($75,000) hoax, but the cops are still investigating:
Cops are referring to this operation as a well-being check. They apparently take these well-being checks pretty seriously:

Nice to know we now live in a country where a simple phone call can trigger a full blown SWAT response from 16 different police departments.
The comments posted at that site are from people even more pissed than the average freeper!
Did they shoot his dog?
How much damage did they do to his house? Who’s gonna pay for the repairs and all that overtime???

The story reminds me of a “Far Side” cartoon where a man is sitting in a bar watching the news on TV and his friend says, “Hey, isn’t that your dog biting the President?”

Its a good thing, he wasn’t home pondering suicide. They would have busted in and killed him, and any family pets.

Cops wish they could charge the public with being stupid, I’ve heard it called OHBWS (Occupying a Human Body While Stupid).
To that I say fine, as long as we can bring charges against them for the same thing.

If police are getting federal or state money for SWAT programs, they’re going to find all sorts of reasons to use SWAT teams.
