Too many Americans have way too much trust in the government. They don’t understand that the government will keep taking from us until we force it to stop. Just look at what our complacency has created so far. We are losing more ground everyday with the commie democrats slapping around the gutless republicans who are suppose to defend us.

I said they “could” record mileage when cars are inspected. Any GPS-type device is an obvious non-starter.

We are allready taxed on the number of miles we drive!...

No, you're taxed on the number of gallons of gas you buy. You could put it in an SUV or an econobox.

This is the basis for automatic traffic tickets, with fines withdrawn directly from your bank account. Getting GPS into your car is the first step.

They could use the EZ Pass to send you automatic speeding tickets. They know the distance you traveled and the amount of time it took.

Why are you paying for travel on private roads not maintained by a state or federal government? Why are you paying for mileage accrued riding around a large ranch or farm? If you drive across multiple states, who gets the revenue? The odometer approach is too simple. It nicks you for driving in areas that the government has no business assessing taxes to support.

I don't do a lot of private road or farm driving. I don't imagine very many people do.

They devised exceptions for the fuel tax for farm use. I imagine such could be developed for any new system.

Wake up everyone this is not about tax revenue. If if was then they would just raise the federal gas tax. This is about tracking everyone.

Any excuse to extract more of the wealth of America so they can loot it.

Two Hundred Million Dollars to study the feasibility of this?

How about we just bombard them with not only "no" but ______ (fill in the blank with the expletive or word of your choice) NO! e-mails and letters before this even gets off the ground.

The only reason they 'need' more money is so they can spend more.

Until they get spending under control (and that will take some serious cuts) it will never be enough. Gathering taxes and data will just be more expenditures whether the boondoggle makes a dime, and shunt the money to the approved groups who are eligible for Federal contracts.

We should concede a gas tax increase, 10 or 20 cents, just to keep up with inflation - but NEVER a mileage tax

No, we shouldn't. Sorry. No way.

If the current Government of the United States of America wasn't pi$$ing away the wealth of generations, I might consider it, but we will no more get any sort of fiscal responsibility out of Washington D.C. by giving them more money than we will get winos to quit drinking by handing out Thunderbird on streetcorners.

If you want roads rebuilt, I suggest putting the welfare class to work . The last time we had a depression, government jobs built much of the infrastructure to be found, now rusting and crumbling, on the roads of America (CCC, WPA). It needs to be rebuilt, so let's get something for the money.

And so will be the REPUBLICAN position...I sure hope you’re ok with having a transponder, having your movements tracked and logged, and PAYING THROUGH THE TEETH to drive.

Because, I promise you, YOU WILL GET IT.

Have a good evening.

All it would take is one state Governor and Legislature to make it happen (even better, a majority coallition of Governors). Just pass a law that the state will collect all taxes and then pay the Fed it’s fair share according to the constitution. It really wouldn’t be that hard, especially now in the time of the Tea Party.

” It really wouldn’t be that hard, especially now in the time of the Tea Party “

A little reminder for everyone on this thread who thinks this might be a good idea, with just a little tweaking —

It’s not “Tea Party” - it’s T.E.A. Party, which stands for “Taxed ENOUGH, Already!!”

Exactly. And what better way to regain control of OUR money than by brining the taxes back closer to home. Beyond our nationl defense, what does the Fed need money for? The states can handle everything else.

Or I could start making my own gasoline

Good luck with that. I think the neighbors would notice the fractionating column.
