I think I know why the informing turned into the donkey derby we've seen. Obama wanted to pre-empt Trump, so he ordered the information to be rushed out to the press before anyone knew what had really happened except for the kill. He and his Administration could have confined themselves to saying, "Osama bin Laden had been killed. We'll add further details as soon as they become available [
i.e., are checked out]"
Instead, he and the rest of the guys prefered to showboat it. And look at the result...

To be more precise, Obama could have confined himself to saying bin Laden was nailed and then given a speech about what a great day it was for America. And then add, "we'll release further details when they become available" and stick to it.

I think I know why the informing turned into the donkey derby we've seen. Obama wanted to pre-empt Trump, so he ordered the information to be rushed out to the press before anyone knew what had really happened except for the kill. There's another consideration at play here, too.
It's becoming apparent that much of the backing and filling taking place in the description of the incident is to align the story with "international norms of political correctitude".
The administration doesn't want to become the target of any ICJ or UN "investigation" -- so they keep altering the story.
Somehow, though, I think they've stepped in it. And gotten it all over themselves.
Woulda been so much easier for them if they'd just said "We killed the SOB...captured the body...got a positive ID...and buried his sorry ass at sea. No further comment."
