In the Viet Nam era there was a famous photo of a young man being shot in the head. The media intentionally published it — precisely because it “inflamed” someone: Americans. That and innumerable other photos, in order to achieve a desired effect.

Go back 20+ years from that: What about the pictures (and news reels) of the decomposing corpses of Mussolini and his mistress Clara Petacci strung up from a gas station in Milan? Those are damn gruesome.

Hell, they scared Hitler into committing suicide, so they had an effect as well.
