CBS News Poll analysis by the CBS News Polling Unit: Sarah Dutton, Jennifer De Pinto, Fred Backus and Anthony Salvanto.
A new CBS News/New York Times poll shows President Obama's overall approval rating has jumped by an impressive 11 percentage points in the wake of the U.S. military mission which killed Osama bin Laden, and there is overwhelming support for how Mr. Obama handled the situation.
But Americans do not feel safer. In fact, the poll shows that six out of every ten Americans believe the threat of terrorism will increase in the U.S. over the next few months as a result of bin Laden's death.
The poll found that 57 percent of Americans generally approve of Mr. Obama in the wake of the raid in Pakistan. Two weeks ago, when bin Laden was still America's most-wanted terrorist, the president's overall approval rating was at 46 percent. A whopping 85 percent of those polled gave Mr. Obama high marks for his handling of the operation to find bin Laden.
It's unclear, however, how long Mr. Obama's rise in the polls will last.

Let's hope he tanks from the "controversy" of taking all the credit and the Public finds out OBL was drug away from the compound and then shot, unarmed. It's too late to blame Bush now......
Poll of 532 adults which would explain the discrepancy between these results and Rasmussen’s likely voter poll.
No doubt, the sample is also heavily skewed Democrat.
IOW, another worthless seeBS poll that the media willt trumpet!
These are not even likely voters so this poll does not accurately measure political impact.
Total Respondents 532
Total Republicans 153 129(24%)
Total Democrats 191 194(36%)
Total Independents 188 209(40%)
Like I said, heavily skewed sample to get the results they wanted!
not a whole lot and not something that’s going to stick with $5/gallon gas here...
Rasmussen is the one that seems most confusing and his sampling methods are behind the times.
Not "likely voters", "registered voters" or even "US citizens".
Couldn’t agree more. bin Laden will be a distant memory come next November but $4-5 gas, inflation, unemployment, and general economic malaise will remain.
Pew and Gallup are working on much larger and broader samples as we type. They Expect a similar result.
But they all do not expect this bump to hold up.
A poll of 532 people... all of whom happen to be part of Michelle’s personal staff.
There is still much to be desired in regards to the ignorance of the General Public. The MSM still has them safely secured by a nose ring.
Still can’t break 60% with this news?
Whew...that's taking the sting out of $4.29 gas and a 5% dip in the stock market since Monday...
By the way I am so proud of President Bush saying he won't go to NY with Obama..I guess Obama will be busing in his commie Union workers in so they can clap for the Muslim..He needed President Bush so he could get more people there..I do however hope he goes on his own the people that were involved with 9/11 would want him there alone..
The average voter is a disgrace and knows NOTHING of significance which would produce an intelligent vote.
Bin Laden News?
Is that what CBS is calling themselves now? Seems appropriate.
Won’t last, by next week when gas continues to rise it will be down below the previous low.
Bad thing about that is?.........THEY VOTE!
It’s hard to say what is going on. Obama was staying way too high prior to getting Bin Laden.
