When I first heard the story the term Geronimo was the code word to be given when OBL had been taken out. There have been a number of different ways the story has been told since then. I don’t think there is an official version, but the information I first heard was from a reporter who had just finished a telephone briefing from “the most senior administration officials”. Geronimo meant that the mission, the assassination of OBL, had been accomplished. Maybe that reporter got it wrong, but then maybe the reporter who penned this thread got it wrong.
Back at the White House Situation Room, word was relayed that bin Laden had been found, signaled by the code word Geronimo. That was not bin Ladens code name, but rather a representation of the letter G. Each step of the mission was labeled alphabetically, and Geronimo meant that the raiders had reached step G, the killing or capture of bin Laden, two officials said.
