Islamic Scholars Split Over Sea Burial for Bin Laden
NYTimes ^ | May 2, 2011 | ELISABETH BUMILLER and JOHN LELAND

Islamic scholars and clerics were divided Monday over whether it was appropriate for American forces to bury Osama bin Laden at sea, a decision that added an ambiguous coda to a life that had been clouded in ambiguity and secrecy over the past decade.

Bin Laden, who left a legacy of death and destruction upon sites around the world, has no final burial place.

American officials on Monday stressed that the sea burial was arranged according to Islamic custom, but some clerics objected that Bin Laden should have been buried on land in a simple grave.

He should have been buried in a vat of pig fat.

If he was wrapped in pig fat, I approve.

I see no reason why a cultist who uses his religious ideology to murder thousands should have that religion respected. It’s totally illogical.

They should have stuffed a bone up his ass and let the jackals drag him off.

They should have built a huge funeral pyre out of burning Korans, using pig grease to stoke the flames and burned his rotting carcass on it.

Agreed. When they killed Saddam Hussein, I don’t remember honoring his religious beliefs in burial.

This is the first I heard that burial at sea is an Islamic custom.

Are we to believe that desert nomads, and landlocked mountain dwellers have always carted their dead off to the sea?

If this had happened under Bush's watch; what would the MSM be saying about the haste to get rid of the body?

I strongly believe that he should have been skinned and turned to shoes. That would have been the height of insult in arab eyes; especially if they were ladies shoes.

You would be wrong. Saddam Hussein was treated to traditional Islamic burial rites and interred in a compound he had built for himself near his birthplace.

He was given much better treatment than UBL.

OBL’s burial at sea was entirely appropriate if for no other reason than to have no place that his followers and cohorts could use as a shrine or a place of worship.

He should have been buried face down, wrapped in pig intestines and with his feet facing towards mecca.

Good post, S4, but I’m way past the point of caring what ‘Islamic Scholars’ think.

I have never heard before of a Muslim sea burial not involving a fleet of warships being taken down in battle.

This is such a convenient thing. Probably does in fact make sense in the long run. If we did have his body it would have been too stinky, and in violation of Muslim tradition to hand back. That would make them mad at the US.

It is all likely a lie; he is probably frozen on a slab in some destroyers freezer. Hopefully on a shelf below, not above, the ice cream.

Burial at sea was best idea. He’s fishfood and they can’t come and ‘venerate’ him as a martyr.

Bingo! Much like the Soviets did with the corpse of Adolf Hitler; no remains, no shrine. As far as following Islamic funeral rites, good call, and damned good PR value. Shows we have more class than the enemy.
