Well, I reckon the building of a new, secretive 18’ wall compound next to lots of military installations would have drawn a little bit of attention. If Osama was even slightly afraid of the Pakistani military, he would never have situated his hideout at this location.
On the contrary, he seems to have regarded the Pakistani military as a protective presence. That tells us pretty much everything we need to know.
Nobody can say with a straight face that lots of people in the Pak military didn't know Osama was there. I doubt you can live in the neighborhood of Pakistan's military elites, right next to where they send their kids to prep school, and not be under minute scrutiny by every police and intelligence agency in Pakistan. People had to have been told by VERY senior officials: "what's inside that compound is none of your business, do not ask questions, do not talk about it, and report to us here IMMEDIATELY if you see strangers snooping around asking questions about it".
Walls around a home are not uncommon there, the richer the person the higher the walls.
He undoubtedly had followers within the Pak government but I wouldnt go as far as to blame the Pak government for them. It looks like a case of hiding in plain sight, where better to hide? He thought we and the Paks were still searching the border caves. The high walls, opaque windows, burning their garbage and other security measures show that he was hardly comfortable.
