But in the end, a blistering critique from her own team of managers may have been too much for the federal security director at Newark Liberty International Airport to withstand.
Barbara Bonn Powell, who has held the Transportation Security Administration’s top post at Newark Liberty since January 2008, sent a staff-wide e-mail to the TSA’s 1,400 employees at the airport Tuesday, announcing she was stepping down to take a job at the agency’s headquarters in Arlington, Va.
Though the TSA declined to link her departure to the airport’s security breaches. Powell herself touched on the subject in her message to employees.
"Time marches on," said the 46-year-old veteran government attorney, who marked her nine-year anniversary with the TSA on Tuesday. "The best leaders are those that know when to step up and, equally important, when the time is right to move on."
Referring to the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, when United Airlines Flight 93 took off from Newark before crashing in a Pennsylvania field, Powell wrote, "Even in adversity, Team EWR demonstrates its commitment to ensuring that it will never happen again — Not on Our Watch.
"Nothing can change that — not the security breach of January 3, 2010, or the events of the last several months — not even the media barrage that has inevitably accompanied these events."

In addition to Powell’s leaving, the TSA also confirmed it was replacing her supervisor, Northeastern Area Director James Blair.

For what it's worth, I read about the same career trajectory for some of the commanders who couldn't handle battle in Beyond the Band of Brothers by Major Dick Winters.
