Ben, just IMAGINE how this story would have been trumpeted 24/7 if this incident had occurred on President Bush’s watch.
Just heard the top-of-the-hour network news. Nada.
As one of my long time friends who got to know a number of muzzies back in the 60’s during his days in the NSA always says, you’ll meet some nice ones, but regardless of how much they befriend you, never, EVER turn your back on one, meaning you can NEVER trust them no matter how well you think you know them.

What is it going to take to get these stupid Americans to see the light on what Islam and Muzzies believe and practice?
How many more innocent lives will be taken until the world turns around and deals with them in a merciless manner?

All I can think of is that at some point during or after an argument the Afghan got behind a machine gun and ordered them to drop their weapons. Having known the Afghan long enough as a student, they probably convinced themselves that he was just angry and wouldn't actually shoot, and were complying to help defuse the situation. Maybe after taking one hostage, the others decided to disarm to talk the Afghan out of it?
Either way, once they were disarmed, he simply mowed them all down, then waited for the QRF. That's just speculation, but I don't see how else you could feasibly kill nine people before one of them rushed you. Most everyone I knew in Afghanistan had a knife handy for exactly such business.
I'm also against disarming at gunpoint with ten to one odds in my favor. The military is extremely risk averse these days, and a lot of that is ingrained more and more into basic decision making. There are still holdouts of aggressive thinking and action, but the military culture is increasingly one of passivity and ass-covering.
Back to the incident. Unfortunately, literally everyone who could shed light on this is dead. There'll be some forensic information of value, but no real explanation of the incident itself. What the troops were thinking is anybody's guess now.

The MINUTE we become privy to firm, corroborated intelligence that you have plans to harm the United States or one of our recognized allies — or, worst case — DO, in fact carry out such an operation, the United States and any such allies who wish to assist will come to you and request that you cease and desist. And also remember that, since we have pulled our guys out of other nations and closed those bases – horribly costly activities with which we are no longer burdened — we have devoted those diverted resources to new, more effective human intelligence gathering methods using many of YOUR citizens as paid snitches (no more stupid Church Amendment!) so we WILL KNOW when you’re up to no good. And don’t forget that those freed up resources will allow development of more devastating weapons should we need them. Trust us when we tell you that they’re really cool.
Speaking of “cool,” we’ll send all the Kool-Aid you might request but the FOREIGN AID FROM HERE IS OVER. Yep, the gravy train is out of fuel. Since so much of it has wound up in the Swiss accounts of your local despot (or back in a few international banks to cover their crappy “loans” to your dear leader to support his regime), your citizens probably won’t even miss it.
4. Once those smoking ruins have sufficiently cooled – and the radiation levels have fallen — we will put boots on the ground, clear any remaining resistance and seize your former property for the benefit of those who participated in the neutralization of the threat you posed. Casualties among our troops should be very limited because, as we think you have seen, the weapons possessed by the United States will leave very few to resist. REREAD 4 AND THINK 51st STATE!

No, something about being late for Oprah, some fundraiser dinner for his campaign in NY, a tee time tomorrow. But this might force him into acknowledging the deadly weather in the south the past few days. If he does comment on this, he’ll probably just say that he has talked to Karzai and they’re going to try to not have their guys kill ours so much in the future.
Seriously, this is such a sad event, and I cannot comprehend how he was able to disarm and kill nine of ours. Something is very wrong with our ROE, especially when you consider that there is a history of the muslim trainees turning on us.
The families of these slain service members will no doubt be livid and hopefully, loud, about what went wrong that allowed this to happen.

US servicemen need to institute an unwritten “rule”. As much as humanly possible, NO Afghan national will go uncovered by an armed US soldier in any situation. This dirtbag should have died the minute he pulled the gun.

Now, be clear in observing our reactions and our government’s reactions, and be clear in remembering the electionering, self-serving, nationalist phony outrage that comes out of Karzai every time some innocent civilian or Afgan soldier is ACCIDENTALLY killed by friendly fire.
Now, why; really why are we helping the Afghans?
When we are done, or simply when we leave, will we have changed them from the culture within which a majority of them can embrace the Taliban? We have to answer that question and if we cannot even ask it, then we need to just leave. Not another American should die trying to do for them what they don’t want to do for themselves - at least not enough of them it seems. And yes that IS sad for the rest. Maybe one day they will rebel against both Karzai and the Taliban on their own. Of course Pakistan will never let them succeed in that.
The Afghan pilot had befriended the American pilots over a long period of time and they had forgotten that he was a Muslim. When he told them to disarm, they thought of it in the same manner we might think of it here in America. But ultimately, Muslims do not see us in the same light. We are infidels, not really human, and no more problem to slaughter than a sheep.
