i have this mental image of them setting the explosives and pushing the plunger — just as the new madrid fault decides it’s finally time to let go . . .

Does anyone know of a website with drawings and/or maps that show exactly what is involved here?
All I can find is that it may be an issue of deciding whether to flood lots of farmland or to allow Cairo, IL to be badly flooded.

My father was a construction worker in the 1930s. He worked on a bridge over the Mississippi River at that time. He drove us across it in the 1976, during a cross-country trip. Wonder how it will fare in this situation, or if it is even still in use?

Reading the title, I figured it was terrorists.
Upon further reading, I see it’s the Army Corps of Engineers.

I have a mental image of Tuco and Blondie blowing up the bridge with stirring Ennio Morricone music in the background.

Could be. I’m a little confused looking at different Google images. Seems like the route across the MS now is a four-lane interstate highway. I’m pretty sure the one we went over was two lanes, and scary high for the little girl I was at the time.

"Reading the title, I figured it was terrorists. Upon further reading, I see its the Army Corps of Engineers."In this particular case, there's no real difference.

my image is that after all the labor of sandbagging, that theyd simply back concrete trucks up and finish the walls to ease the manpower needed next time it rains...
