When was “African” a race?

It is plausible to me to think that they may have reserved the term “negro” for what are known today as “African Americans”, using continental designators for “African” or “Indian” or “Oriental”. But I don’t know this to be true.

It's not! Mine says "negro" and I was born in the 70"s.
