Thw closest I can find at ancestry is a passenger list A. Suamalien, Dep 23 Jan 1905 (Hawaii) Arr 19 Aug 1905. Doesn't mean anything.

And the factcheck number I mentioned before, the essentials match.

I found by googling several with a surname Smelain, a William C. Smelain in google books, none in Hawaii though.
