“Just like she doesn’t pay when she gives away 200 Pontiacs. The “winners” of those cars are stuck with tax, title and license while Oprah simply gives Pontiac a couple of on air mentions.”

I dislike Oprah as much as anyone, but sniping about her acts of generosity is silly. Whoever pays for what the audience gets in terms of gifts, the audience gets the gift. Oprah had a hand in it. I give Oprah credit for that one.

And as for complaining about tax and title... are you serious? Give me any new car, even a complete piece of crap like an Obama Motors Volt, and I’ll deal with tax and title. I won’t complain for a second.

The problem is that it has the “feel” of the elite throwing alms to the “little people”. Is everyone (actually ANYONE) in the audience so poor and downtrodden that they need a gift from Oprah like mana from heaven? I doubt it. The whole screaming and fainting and jumping is so school-girlish and childish. It’s mindless group dynamics, like a Justin Beiber concert. If Oprah wanted to really help, scour the list of homeless shelters in Chicago. Find out women with children who have no transport and get give THEM 200 cars, with tax/title/insurance paid for, and gas for a year. That would help people, not those who may or may not need a car for the kid going off to college.

A friend of mines daughter won a new Mini Cooper valued at $20,000. The tax she was going to have to pay was near $10,000. She was offered the car or $10,000. She took the money but probably lost half of that in taxes.
