I saw about 50 teenagers running down the middle of Connecticut Avenue around 4:00. They were beating and kicking another teenager, whom I think was the stabbing victim. When the mob took off down the street, the victim got up and was stumbling around in the middle of the street. It was very frightening because the mob was completely out of control. They were headed straight for my car. Traffic was heavy and at a standstill. There was nothing I could do other than lock my doors. Fortunately the mob ran past me down toward Woodley Park.
did you think about taking refuge in a McDonald’s? I hear they are pretty good safe havens.
Good God.
I haven’t had that happen, but back in the old days I used to get off the highway in the South Bronx so I could take a bridge over to Manhattan. There was one really slummy block along the way, and a stop light.
I always made sure not to pull all the way up to the light if it was red, but to leave some room so I could move forward if some of the thuggish pedestrians approached the car. Which was locked, of course, but I didn’t entirely trust that while stopped. And I figured if necessary I’d run the red light and take my chances with the police.
