Cummins and Kohler make some nice generator set packages for the home. Stay away from Generac. They offer both gas fired and diesel sets. They can be installed with automatic transfer switches which automatically start the generator when the power goes out and shuts it off when the power returns. All this will cost more, but it all depends I guess how much you are willing to spend.

Generac makes great gensets. There are more Generacs installed in Katrina devastated South Mississippi than any other brands that I see. I do see some Kohler and some big Cats... and I have never heard of more than an isolated module problem with Generacs. Most use Ford engines are are very reliable. I personally have 25kw Propane powered Generac and I would replace it with the same unit if something happened and it had to be replaced. I can't imagine anything that I couldn't deal with myself... short of rewinding the armature. Keep it supplied with a good battery, synthetic oil and regular filter changes and servicing belts and hoses etc... and you are good to go.
