The explanation I read once, is that poor black females know that there is little hope for their children. They began giving them frenchie sounding names, hoping that it will make them special in some way.
I always figured it was because they can’t spell.
Sad thinking as saddling them with some made up name doesn’t improve their prospects. They need intact families with fathers and a healthy respect for getting an education.
