When I was in Germany, nothing the Polizei liked more beatin' the snot outta an unruly GI. We had a major in our unit who ignored a camera ticket for speeding on das Autobahn in his privately owned vehicle. (Certain areas of the Autobahn have speed limits.) Two crisp looking Polizei showed up at battalion headquarters. I was the S-2 clerk, and the first person you encountered when you entered the building. (The gate guards let them on the Kaserne.) They very politely inquired about his whereabouts. I managed to find him and he stood in the hall explaining that it was all a misunderstanding and his check would be in the mail sofort! He was actually a very nice guy and I was more than a little embarrassed for him. Luckily, he didn't get a beat down. That time.

We had them in Fort Sill, OK - every Friday and Saturday night on the strip in Lawton, OK. It probably saved more than a few military careers and ranks. :)

And without these patrols, American would have missed out on...the "Aunt Jemima Treatment":

I use to do it when I was in the army..patrolled on foot in downtown Columbia, SC, the street in front of the state capitol building.

I grew up in Columbia SC. I remember during the Vietnam War, Main Street was full of soldiers in uniform at night. Don't see that anymore.

“Posse Comitatus?”

So? They don’t give a s*** about the Constitution, why would some piddly federal law make a difference? They just make it up as they go along...

And, armed with this lack of knowledge, they just jump right in and start slashing and burning. Maybe I’m just getting too old.

You’re not getting old. Some people are just getting tired of waiting in their self-defined compound, behind gallons of iodine-treated water and 10 pound cans of pork and beans, cleaning their guns and waiting for the UN and black helicopters to show up.

From http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/04/22/us-georgia-soldiers-patrol-idUSTRE73L3G620110422

“They cannot make arrests or be armed. Doing so would violate the 1878 federal Posse Comitatus Act, which prohibits the use of military personnel as civilian law enforcement.

But they will carry radios allowing them to relay information to local law enforcement and military police if the need arises.”

WKUHilltopper, I see you have (Fix bayonets) in your tag line.

Did you ever serve in the US military and “Fix bayonets” at the order of an officer or NCO?

Just wondering - I didn’t notice any military service in your Bio.

Speaking of PC, When a civilian in a fight tells a serviceman he’s a faggot, the cops turn a blind eye. Will the servicemen get the same from his superiors in the new Gay Friendly Armed Services?

My question is if the local police are outmanned and outgunned in Columbus, Georgia and the government is using locally based military personnel, why aren’t we doing the same thing in El Paso, Texas?

So you're comparing US military personnel to Nazis.

Maybe you should put on a uniform before you make such idiotic camparisons.

This is BS...like saying to the Jews in the 40s those free train rides are on the way to courtesy showers...

So according to you, the Shore Patrol/courtesy patrol is picking up troops in town, taking them back to the base, and then dosing them with Zyklon B?

That's a...novel outlook.

That’s coming. Military are not to be involved in civil police matters.

Maybe I’m saying military has no business in civil police matters.

It's not a civil matter if soldiers are involved. Just because I, as an Army Officer, may be off-duty at a given time that doesn't mean I can tell a General to go screw himself.

You are a soldier 24 hours a day and must act like one. And if you think some boozed-up Private can disobey a non-com just because they are off base on a Friday night you're nuts.

These soldiers usually get two choices: go home or go to jail. These patrols help more than they hurt.

No, I know they can’t refuse orders and understand that. It’s a civil affair that needs to be handled civilly. But the “generals” should understand they’re are complicit in violating federal law.

It's not a civil affair if no laws have been broken. That is what these patrols aim to do. Stop crimes before they occur. You get a group of Privates out and about they are a lot less likely to get into trouble if they see a couple E-7's walking around with local cops. It's about deterence. Simple as that.

I was stationed at Benning and went out in Columbus once in awhile. There is not a lot of love between the locals and the soldiers.

The Posse Comitatus Act is a United States federal law (18 U.S.C. § 1385) passed on June 18, 1878 substantially limiting the powers of the federal government to use the military for law enforcement. The Act prohibits members of the military from exercising nominally state law enforcement, police, or peace officer powers that maintain “law and order” on non-federal property (states and their counties and municipal divisions) within the United States.
