In bridge, a trump card is held in reserve for winning a trick. In politics, Donald Trump is anything but reserved and appears to think he might trick enough voters to win the next presidential election.
There's plenty to draw on when critiquing a possible Trump candidacy. His multiple marriages (three) and affairs provide fodder for the media and contrast poorly with President Barack Obama's "family values" image as husband of one wife and father of young daughters, whom he clearly loves.
In recent weeks, Trump has been trying to gain a toehold in the evangelical community, which is especially influential in Iowa, where caucuses begin the process of nominating a presidential candidate.
In an interview with David Brody of the Christian Broadcasting Network, Trump described Christianity as "a wonderful religion." In answer to a question about his faith, Trump said, "I believe in God. I am Christian. I think the Bible is certainly, it is 'the' book. It is the thing."
To evangelical ears, that lacks substance. While a candidate's faith should matter only if it affects policy, if someone wishes to use his or her faith to win votes, then voters ought to be able to judge the depth of that faith as a means of determining their credibility.
What should we make of Trump telling Brody that people send him Bibles all the time and that he stores them "in a very nice place"? "There is no way I would ever throw anything, to do anything negative to a Bible. I would have a fear of doing something other than very positive so actually I store them and keep them and sometimes give them away to other people."
Does he read the Bible and believe what it says? How about the parts concerning marriage, divorce and fornication?

In 2008, did Cal have write up about the reasons not to vote for Barry? Unless he pointed out he couldn’t write a story because he had nothing to back it up, everything he says here is null and void. Cal, too, has a history that we can look to for his credibility.
Honestly, that Trump is looking so good is a pretty damning indictment of the field on our side thusfar. That said... continuing to listen to him, esp. on NBC issue.
BAHHH. Bambi’s on the down low, he’s a closet homo.
Another voter without sin who will only support a candidate without sin, who, of course, must be an evangelical Christian.
I gotta say, with who the talking heads are that are coming out of the woodwork against the Donald. Make me want to vote for him.
I haven’t decided for sure on a candidate yet...and I do have my suspicions about Trump, but so far I see him as the ONLY candidate who can make Obama sweat, stumble and fall - especially in the debates.
Sorry, but all the others are way too nicey-nicey. I couldn’t believe how Palin kept brown-nosing Geraldine Ferraro on Fox News last year when they did a co-interview. Ferraro was totally dismissive of Palin and the whole time Palin just sat there and took it. I think Palin is generally tough, but Trump DOESN’T let anyone get away with saying things that aren’t true. Plus, he handles the media very well and is never talked over by hags like those on The View.
I’m so sick of nice guys. We need to fight fire with fire - no more Romneys, McCains, etc.
“...father of young daughters, whom he clearly loves.”
I’d say from watching Obama with his family that he loves them as much as he is capable of loving. I just don’t think his capacity is very high.
Some psychiatrist would have a field day figuring it all out, but the damage done to his psyche as a kid that manifests itself in his adult narcissism, appears to keep a wall between him and even the people he no doubt loves most in the world.
Look at the first official family portrait, I think it was for a Christmas card. (memory is that it was done by Annie Leibovitz). Each of the woman is touching someone else in the family. Not him! He’s got his hands in his lap as if they were playing the National Anthem. I really don’t think he’s capable of love as the rest of us are.
These are certainly valid concerns for voters. Cal Thomas might get more respect for his views if he posited in the same article one or more candidates he supported, why, and what they’re going to do about the valid issues Trump has raised.
Thanks. But that was weak - it could have been said about any liberal, IMO. So much for being a conservative - he’s a quiet RINO who comes out of the closet to toe others in line towards the RINO agenda.
How about a constitutional conservative like me who’s got a problem with Trump’s depraved view of property rights? If he like Kelo, and he does, he’s no conservative. Wolf-in-Sheep’s clothing. You watch your mutton, FRiend.
CAL......If you hate Trump and Love Obama........you have some support here at FR... you would be right at home.
Why is Donald Trump bothering you. Please think a moment before you answer.
Cal Thomas is a Liberal’s token conservative lackey buffoon.
To: Cal Thomas
Hey Cal, everybody wasn’t an altar boy. God is a forgiving God; a characteristic you should work on developing. Mike “The Huckster” Huckabee was a Baptist preacher and he’s a Progressive who will go along to get along.
What Trump said on Rush last week, though, isn't what he's been saying in the past.
Trump's conversion to conservatism is even more recent -- and less convincing -- than Mitt Romney's.
Did you see Palin’s Madison address? You cant seriously expect people to think shell be your typical shrinking Republican after that. She takes it to her enemies toe to toe without flinching. The fact that she remains personable with people she disagrees with is simply a function of good character. Don’t confuse a friendly disposition with the ability to out-maneuver and out-negotiate your opponents. She doesn’t have to hack away at everyone she disagrees with to be effective. She’s a good tactician, and chooses her battles according to the mission. That’s discipline, and that’s character, and that’s good.
