If they were defending themselves, they would have stopped after getting the girl (what the cops are calling her) on the ground. Instead, they kept kicking her in the head, then ran away, then came back to do it again. It had nothing to do with defending themselves.
The way they acted I was waiting for them to kick her upside the head again even after the pool of blood and seizure.
