NORTHBOROUGH — A Northborough man and two gun rights groups have sued the town police chief and the head of the state Firearms Records Bureau in federal court, claiming a state law that bars legal immigrants from owning handguns is unconstitutional.
The suit, filed in U.S. District Court on Friday, says Eoin Pryal was denied an application for a license to carry a handgun by Northborough police because he is not a U.S. citizen, but a permanent resident alien from the United Kingdom.
State law says permanent residents may possess non-large capacity rifles and shotguns, but not handguns and some other weapons.
The lawsuit asks a judge to declare the citizenship requirement unconstitutional.
Northborough Chief Mark Leahy tells the Telegram & Gazette he has no record of Pryal applying for a gun license.

Can’t find a word limiting the right to keep and bear arms to citizens.
For example Steuben became a citizen in 1784. He fought for the US against the English in 1778. The second amendment was adopted in 1791. Now take a guess, do you think they would ever have thought to limit the right to keep and bear arms to citizens ?
In MA It’s hard enough for a 3rd generation citizen to get a gun. I can’t imagine the MA courts will let a legal immigrant - too many drug dealers get student visas. Martha will just say NO.

The people implies citizenship. We infer that the people means citizenship. Otherwise, I agree with your “inference”.

Exactly! Resident aliens are eventually eligible for citizenship. Why should they be denied a right to self defense with handguns in the meantime?
