BREAKING: Baby Joseph is home: defies critics by breathing completely on his own

Baby Joseph with his father Moe Maraachli
early this morning as they head home to Windsor, Canada.

WINDSOR, Ontario, April 21, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Baby Joseph and his family arrived in Windsor, Ontario on a medical transport flight from St. Louis, Missouri this morning. He is now at the family home, according to Brother Paul O’Donnell.

On behalf of Baby Joseph’s family, Brother O’Donnell told LifeSiteNews that that their son was weaned off ventilator support 12 days ago and has been successfully breathing on his own since then.

Baby Joseph, who has been at the center of an international right-to-life debate over the past few months, has defied critics by responding so well to treatment. After the Ontario hospital treating Joseph’s progressive and terminal neurological disease threatened to remove his life support against his parents’ wishes earlier this year, pro-life groups rallied to Joseph’s cause.

With the financial support and assistance of Father Frank Pavone and Priests for Life, Joseph was taken to Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center in St. Louis, Missouri where doctors performed the tracheotomy that Joseph’s parents had been requesting all along.

Sixteen-month-old Baby Joseph received a successful tracheotomy on March 21, responding well to the procedure, which gave him increased mobility and comfort while providing a stable, secure airway. With the tracheotomy, which created an opening into Joseph’s windpipe through an incision in his neck, Joseph’s airway has been kept free from secretions that would have caused him to choke.

Dr. Robert Wilmott, Chief of Pediatrics for SSM Cardinal Glennon and Saint Louis University School of Medicine, said Joseph has been breathing so well on his own there will be no need to take him to a local rehabilitation hospital and he can be transported to Ontario.

“Joseph has been breathing on his own, without the aid of a mechanical ventilator, for more than a week,” Wilmott said. “By providing him with this common palliative procedure, we’ve given Joseph the chance to go home and be with his family after spending so much of his young life in the hospital.”

Meanwhile, Joseph’s parents and 7-year-old brother, who have spent more than a month in St. Louis, have expressed their extreme gratitude to all who have made it possible to save the life of their son.

“So many people from the United States and Canada and all around the world have reached out, sent letters and called my family to let us know they were praying for us and thinking about us,” Joseph’s father Moe Maraachli said. “This has really helped our family through this hard time, to know there is so much kindness in the world.”

“We are so grateful for the amazing care and compassion we have received from the doctors, nurses and staff of Cardinal Glennon. Our family also wants to thank the team at Windsor Regional Hospital for reaching out to our family and Dr. Wilmott and making the transfer back home a reality.”

Commending the staff at Cardinal Glennon, Fr. Frank Pavone of Priests for Life said Joseph has defied so many critics.

“Our mission to save Baby Joseph and help his family was never based on any prediction of the future, but rather on the value of his life here and now. Our critics, on the other hand, looking into the crystal ball that ‘right to die’ advocates seem to always think they have, claimed our intervention was futile because Joseph would only end up having a machine do his breathing for him,” said Fr. Pavone.

“We don’t have to answer their criticism; Joseph is doing that for us, with every breath he takes,” continued Fr. Pavone. “Baby Joseph’s victory over the culture of death is especially powerful now, as we prepare for Easter, a time when Christians everywhere celebrate Jesus’ victory over death.”

“Priests for Life is happy and humbled to have played a small part in making this joyous day possible. We ask everyone to join us as we continue to pray for Baby Joseph and his family.”

Then why use the Nazi propaganda?

Are you accusing Wagglebee of calling for the extermination of disabled people? It looks to me like you are the one using Nazi propaganda. Wagglebee merely brought attention to what you've been saying. He clearly did not agree with it.

I would draw the line when the EEG and MRI shows no brain activity.

Baby Joseph is on the line of that line with brain activity, and you call for him to be killed. So you're saying that if an innocent baby has brain activity, he should be killed, but if there is no brain activity he's already dead so why bother? And you're against the death penalty for convicted murderers? Your only criteria is that the victim must have brain activity. That's sick.

This babies care in no way reaches the level of what the Nazis did to their victims.

No thanks to you. You have called for him to be treated the way the Nazis treated "incurables." Even now that you're faced with the benefits he's receiving from the American way of providing medical care, you still call for the T4 solution. The fact that he hasn't been subjected to it is eating away at you.

Thank you for that refresher course in history. And we now know that baby who was killed in July 1939 was named Gerhard Kretschmar. The neo-eugenicists are trying very hard to repeat that atrocity here and now. That’s why they scream in pain at the good fortune of Baby Joseph, who escaped their clutches. They so wanted him to be the modern day version of Baby Gerhard Kretschmar, and usher in a new era of killing.

I pinged about four freepers who previously expressed a desire for Baby Joseph to be killed. As far as I can tell, none of them showed up. How did you get yours to show up? Did you sprinkle some kind of potion on your post? LOL

I don't know what it is.

I don't even have to look for trolls, they just find me. And then, after they get zotted they run off to whatever anti-FReeper site they can find and complain about me.

I guess you can call this a Freepacide.
You don’t even have to post an abuse on me, after I post this I will post the abuse button on myself.
You see, I do not want to donate monthly to this site anymore. I donated $10 a month- $120 a year.
The money I save will help pay for the very cool Micheal Kors purse- in a very pretty shade of lavender- that I want.
Free Republic is very schizophrenic.
On one hand, you all rail against taxes.
On the other hand, when people point out the cost of care of taking care of these patients is going to result in increased taxation- you attack the poster. You imply that the posters are Nazis. It is very insulting.
Instead of talking about the problem, and how to solve it in a concrete way- you gather your cohorts and attack. I have nothing against this baby, I am looking at it in the whole context. How can medical care save the most people, get the most bang for the buck, with waste eliminated?
I lurked on Free Republic for many years. Back then( in the 90s, early 2000), it was an interesting website.
There was differences of opinion, and it was very interesting to read.
In the past few years, this website is , quite frankly, boring.
It is like vanilla.
It is boring because you have driven off the people who made this site interesting. There is no discorse, no free flowing of ideas. People are afraid to post because you will zot them.
However, I want that Micheal Kors purse. I willingly want to be zotted.
That is why your Freepathons are no longer making money.
It used to only take 2 weeks to get to the total fundraising goal. You have been at this since the beginning of the month- and only are in the 30% range. You need to take a hard look at yourselves.
Stop calling people who disagree with you Nazis.
Stop calling them names, and calling them ignorant.
Stop ganging up on people.
Quit attacking the Mormons, and people who do not believe Palin is Presidential material.
Try to have a debate. It is much more interesting to read.If you do, people will stop being bored, and come back.
I have been very dissatisfied.
Zot me please.
You will make some snarky remarks about me,after my zot, but I will have the nice, pretty lavender Micheal Kors purse.
Bye, Bye.

Have you been sampling from the hospital pharmacy? That's a really dumb thing to do.

Most of what you wrote is totally incoherent, but there seems to be something about buying a purse. I really don't care if you buy a purse or not, my wife buys purses all the time and I long ago quit trying to figure out why she needed so many.

I guess, but all I got from her post was that she wanted to get zotted so she could get a purse.

Someone that incoherent would be well served to oppose euthanasia with everything they've got because they are almost certainly in the crosshairs.

You just don’t get it. You can get handbags made out of just about any kind of skin. Maybe not the skin she would prefer, but a girl can dream. Until then, there’s this...

They never see it ever happening to themselves, though. It’s always something that happens to other people.
