During the 2008 election cycle, Mitt Romney was often accused of treating politics more like a consumer-focused business than an exercise in leadership. My view is, we ought to double Guantanamo, he said, radiating the sense that if primary voters wanted something, anything, hed be willing to sell it. His strategists obsessed about creating and selling Brand Romney. To many, these efforts made him look like a crass twit, a market researchers caricature of the perfect Republican candidate, even as he came in second-place for the GOP nomination. This election, however, Romney may have to compete with Donald Trump.

Good points, I’m really not a DT supporter whatsoever. As I said, I’m just keeping my eyes open and listening. There’s no one on my list of potential candidates that really knocks me out and time is ticking. So who is it you like Vigilanteman?
“Trump has turned over a new leaf and has seen the light and folly of the idealistic Leftist myth”
No he’s not. Listen closer. He’s still protecting Medicare and the stimulus, among other things, and though I admit it appeals to the enduring conservative soul and has traditionally been associated with rightist parties, trade protectionism is now largely a creature of the Left. There is so very little of conservatism in Trump that I am surprised so few of us see through him. Are we really so superficial that attacking Obama is that important? Would we vote for Clinton if she brought up the certificate?
The MSM keeps running futile polls showing Obama vs Romney and Huckabee. They call those two the ‘front runners’ and keep asking where is the Republican ‘field’, and when is the campaign going to start. On Tax Day, (April 15), the real Republican candidates launched their campaign, but the MSM was absent. Just as well. Atlas Shrugged can be a hit movie without the traditional media/marketing, and the new age candidates like Bachmann, Palin, Cain, can campaign leaving the idiot MSM out of the loop.
I agree, things are quite chaotic. My hope is that Trump will allow a real Conservative to come forward and follow his lead with as much success as he has had.
Then we can win with a real and solid Conservative agenda.
There never has been nor ever will be any other form of capitalism other than crony capitalism. Wealthy capitalists will always have the motive and means to demand socialist benefits for themselves. Ideologies to the contrary are deployed merely to sideline potential competitors. Tycoons that cannot secure socialist benefits are displaced by those that can.
So the question is never about whether to have crony capitalism but only about who will get the benefits. Should it be foreigners and internationalist billionaires or regular Americans?
I’m kinda worried that you’re right - and that a lot of conservatives are letting themselves be led around by a ring in their noses.
We need to stop letting ourselves be wowwed by media-generated hype, and instead stick with the Olde Wayes.
I’d be happy for some combination of the following: DeMint, Bachmann, Palin, Cain, West, Walker, Barbour, Pawlenty, McDonnell, Otter, or some others who I’m not thinking of right now. None of them are perfect, each has one or two things that some one-trick pony FReeper could naysay, but overall, they’re a pretty strong bench, though some of them need a little more time in the minors.
Huckabee (or Hucklebee, as my wife calls him), Romney, and other retreads? No thanks.
Huntsman is right out.
That is exactly the point I’ve been making through this thread, well put Psyco-Freep. Try to make a simple point about a candidate some people dislike and you’re chastized and berated over the coals. Discussion is good, opinionated attacks are not.
LOL
You said: "I'm certianly willing to listen to his ideas. "... new ideas in conservative thought".
You think Trump is a conservative. Wow. Talk about not having a clue.
“There is a difference”
Not much. I’ll take your word for Romney’s transparent perfidy. I vaguely remember him apologizing and blabbing about a change of heart, but let’s assume that was after he was caught. Being upfront about his change of heart is only better in a political sense. It helps Trump “get in front of the story,” as they say, but it doesn’t prove he’s telling the truth. He has an obvious motivation to lie, which I don’t think I need to explain.
The best thing we can say about Trump, given the current information, is that he’s either more honest than or a better liar than Romney. Excuse me if I demure from dubbing him a “bigger man.” He very well could be a worse man, for all I know.
Romney is a Pathetic business man. He plays both sides for his own gain. Realistically, Trump is no different. It is just something to note that what ever Trump is doing currently, it is working.
If you hate Mitt Romney because you think he’s a crass twit, and then say the answer is Donald Trump...that’s so stupid and divorced from reality that I’m not sure I even know where to start.
I watched Trump explain his “Change of heart” in an interview, when he was asked about his former belief and why he had changed his position and belief that Abortion was wrong.

I have never said the answer is Donald Trump. Read back on the last several posts. I have made that position quite clear.
Sorry, but your comment was so idiotic you deserved to be raked over the coals. As another poster pointed out, you ignored the fact that Reagan was governor and a presidential candidate, so his SAG presidency was NOT the only yardstick we had, and trying to compare Trump to Reagan in the manner you did was inherently dishonest.
I believe it will pan out to our advantage and help us get a real Conservative to come forward.
LOL, like I said, whatever you say. I’d rather spend time with people building bridges not tearing them down. And Reagan Man, you’re clearly trying to do the later.
