Frontline: Priests Molested “Nearly 80% Of The Town’s Children”

Frontline’s next exposé focuses on the “decades of abuse of Native Americans by priests and other church workers in Alaska,” and in one particular town they find, “nearly 80% of the town’s children were molested” by Catholic priests.

As we reported on this story just a few weeks ago, the Roman Catholic Church, as part of ongoing lawsuits, will make payments to approximately 700 male and female sexual and psychological abuse, molestation, and rape victims who were living in Alaska Native villages and Indian reservations from Montana to Washington, Idaho and Oregon, and who were “sexually or psychologically abused as children by Jesuit missionaries in those states in the 1940s through the 1990s,” according to a statement by attorneys.

The latest agreement will financially compensate 524 victims with $166.1 million in cases including accusations against 140 Jesuit priests, brothers, and nuns from the Oregon Province of the Society of Jesus, in the Pacific Northwest. Only $48 million will come from the Catholic Church, the remainder will be paid by its insurance companies.

None of the Jesuit priests are being charged with any crime related to this abuse, rape, and molestation settlement.

Wifey and I have taught in a few Indian Villages, residents of AK almost 20 years. Child abuse (sexual) is rampant in some villages, girls having babies at age 11 common; to their cousins. You should see some of the genetic problems in certain villages and in other villages it doesn't exist.

The Indians claim it all goes back to when they had all their kids taken from them by US govt. Govt wouldn't give kids back until the Indians stopped moving around with the seasons. That's how the Indians kept White People off their ancestral lands. Once they built permanent villages, they lost 90% of their land, no joke; is what really occurred back in 1940's.

Indians claim all the kids were sexually abused by White (govt school) teachers/admin. Some of it's true, maybe not all. I personally know many elders who were abused. Some of the men abused as kids became abusers themselves, and in some villages you will find several older village members who prey on the young boys in their village.

Somewhat hard to stop with all the alcohol abuse also. Still, the Indians are a pretty good bunch, got a bad deal all around. Our govt is practicing modern day genocide with alcohol & money; just waiting for them all to die off & go away; problem solved.

I also know several men who were sexually abused as kids by church lay people, ect. Some sued, some had problems, others got past it. I also know Whites who were sexually abused by the same Lay People; they never sued or did anything as they felt it would hurt the church; no joke.

So it goes both ways, but those Indian Boys were easy targets for the Church pedophiles who all seemed to get shipped off to Alaska, when they were caught in lower 48. I'm glad they are addressing the issue actually. Many of the Indians who were abused wear this insignia on their ball caps that tells others they suffered as kids; Indian therapy. In some villages, you would be shocked to see how many.

There are other victims, too...the many faithful whose weekly contributions have gone to pay for expensive lawyers, pensions for the retired perverts, and money for the settlements.

Exactly right...

Prove your side. Come on, prove it. Show your evidence. Live up to your claim. You ran out of arguments a long time ago.

You blame messengers, but you don’t comprehend the story. Classic blocking behavior. You are trying to build a correlation that because the messenger is someone you don’t like, then the story isn’t true. Classic logical fallacy. You should know better.

That's a keeper. Put very succinctly.

Of course you ignored the point of my post. Typical.

And it wasn’t directed to you either.

This is a problem where children have been abused all over the world....God bless these victims, who were betrayed by men of God...

I agree but it will never stop until these perpetrators are prosecuted or at the very least kicked out of the Priesthood entirely and made knnown that they are a preditor to any church they may attend. The children will bare the scars of this abuse for life....the perpetrators should not be let go or excused which is how it looks when catholics attempt to divert the happenings. It just reeks to me of co-operating with the wrong side of justice and truth.

Guilty until proven innocent seems to be okay with you. No solid principles when it comes to alleged priestly abuse, I see.

Nobody needs to prove guilt when guilt is admitted by the perps.

Show me your evidence that the victims are lying, and that the church didn’t know about these priests.

Show your work. Prove your claim. The church’s lawyers couldn’t, what special knowledge do you have?

“Germany’s top bishop has informed Pope Benedict XVI about cases of clerical sex abuse in the pontiff’s native Germany and said the pope encouraged him to pursue the truth and assist the victims.

Archbishop Robert Zollitsch said the pope was greatly dismayed and deeply moved as he was being briefed on the scandal during Friday’s meeting at the Vatican.

At least 170 former students from Catholic schools in Germany have come forward recently with claims of physical and sexual abuse, including at an all-boys choir once led by the pope’s brother.

Zollitsch also said he briefed the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith on measures implemented in Germany, and that the Vatican is considering a set of universal norms to deal with cases of clerical sex abuse.

According to a poll conducted by the Emnid institute for N24 television, a full 86 percent of Germans accused the Roman Catholic Church of failing to do enough to explain the allegations of abuse in church-run schools and institutions.

Only 10 percent of the 1,000 people polled on March 10 felt the church was doing enough.”

Mike Ference has some very good ideas about how to put an end to the despicable practices of the pedo priests and their enablers, the Bishops:

All that matters is the anti-papist agenda. Hasn’t changed in centuries.

You don't know much about business, do you? Or car insurance for that matter.

Why can't you just address the issue with a comment which does just that instead of finding ways to discredit others opinions? The catholic church is a business....and yes businesses often do settle out of court. But in this case you are talking a world wide business that stands to have continual lawsuits for the degree of the infestation of these perps worldwide....as with any business they will settle those based on who is involved and the degree of importance to their operations....thus we find many protecting the Pope and various Bishops....but no matter how they play their cards the house of cards within the catholic church is falling....and needs to. IMO God himself has brought this into the public because the church has failed miserably to address it.....Gods cleaning the House because they have refused to.

Personally, I like the ideas of bounty hunters, torture, cattle branding (P for Pervert on their foreheads), castration, penal colonies (like Devils Island), and maybe removal of two or three fingers on each hand.

This goes for all child molesters, clergy or laypersons.
