British military officers will be sent to Libya to advise rebels fighting Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's forces, the UK government has said.
Foreign Secretary William Hague said the group would be deployed to the opposition stronghold of Benghazi.
The BBC understands 10 UK officers and a similar number from France will give logistics and intelligence training.
Mr Hague said it was compatible with the UN resolution on Libya, which ruled out foreign military ground action.
He stressed that the officers would not be involved in any fighting and the move was needed to help protect civilians.

Let me draw it on a napkin for you.
November 2010: Brits and Frogs plan to invade Libya under the guise of humanitarian intervention. A decoy Southern Mistral war game announced for March 21, 2011 to allow for plain sight preparation.
January 2011: Some 300 special forces inserted into eastern Libya to prepare rebellion. Training, drop zones etc.
British government was led to believe it is successful.
February 15, 2011: Rebellion ignited. The date is chosen deliberately to rally AQ supporters.
February 21 2011: William Hague babbles :"Gaddafi fled to Venezuela.
Bummer. First one in a row.
Internet is abuzz and the background on planned aggression on Libya is known.
More than half of Arab League countries abstain from voting. Germany and Turkey sit tight. Ruskies and Chicoms cut enough rope to France and UKUSA.
Oil goes up, dollar goes down.
Easy plunder of Libya became fubar. Welcome to Hotel Libya.
Fog of war is funny thing. In Korean war U.S. claimed shooting down 800 MiG-15s and having 10:1 kill ratio. In reality, it was only 200 MiG 15s. Kill ratio F86:MiG was not even close as advertised, it was 1.3:1.
In Kosovo war, NATO claimed destroying hundreds of Serbian tanks. In reality it was 14. Less than 5% of Serbian combat systems were destroyed in 31,000 sorties. But civilan infrastructure was deliberatelly targeted and destroyed as "colateral damage".
Let's wait and see what will be found in Libyan sand once the fog of war clears.
Hitting Libyan hospitals, telecommunication towers and other stationary object, that's another story. They could not be hidden and they are being hit instead of military targets. That success can not be denied.
List of possible next targets:
One of BRIC embassies in Tripoli (JDAM-GPS) Libyan TV station (cruise missile) Farmer's market (cluster bombs)
Very clever! Superb! You ought to frame this. Post of the day!
..protect civilians? What is he talking about? This is an attempt to topple Gaddaffi. It has no other purpose. Gaddaffi will certainly see it that way, that's for sure. So the Brits had better make sure their side wins...
Days not weeks.....Barry said so.
Ok next queston. WHY? What have Britain and France got to gain from this? Not much. What have they to lose? Huge amounts. What is the chance it will succeed as per your laid out script? Not high. So why do it?
Until such point that we have a high degree of confidence that whatever replaces Daffy will be an improvement (as far as the US and British interests are concerned), and that we're not just handing Libya over to al Queda, then we should stay the hell out.
All praise, honor and glory to the Bard. I hardly had to change a word.
Yes. Days... as in 5,000 of them.
“You can bang on the West all you want. We put the East to shame.”
If you are talking about “China” I am sure you are right. If you are including all of Asia, lumped together, you are maybe only half right.
But we in the west have always set what we thought to ourselves and what we projected was a higher standard.
My only point is that we have been huge hypocrites when it comes to OUR OWN STANDARD, ignoring it at our leisure and for our own benefit and in doing so helping to succor those who we claim we universally oppose.
What’s obvious is in fact we do not universally oppose tyrants and despots and thus we have not earned any right to proclaim it a “right” to militarily intervene in nations ruled by them, just because they are tyrants; which is what is the claim with regard to Libya.
Well, then it must be true.
