Duke has denied all allegations made in lawsuits by dozens of former lacrosse players impacted by false rape claims.
More than three dozen players who were never indicted in a 2006 investigation accused the university of fraud, negligence, conspiracy and obstruction of justice.
In March 2006, Crystal Mangum claimed three white lacrosse players trapped her inside a bathroom at 610 N. Buchanan Blvd., where she was performing as a stripper at a team party, and raped and sexually assaulted her.
The university immediately ended the lacrosse team's season and forced the coach to resign, and investigators collected DNA samples from all of the players.
Mangum's story about the incident was so inconsistent that state officials later declared the players innocent, saying there was no credible evidence against them.
Duke had asked that it be dropped as a defendant in the suits, which also name former Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong and police investigators. A federal judge denied the university's request last month.
In its answer to the suits, Duke said the university, President Richard Brodhead and other high-ranking staff members did nothing illegal or improper. The players' allegations are based on a number of false premises, the university said.
Irving Joyner, a law professor at North Carolina Central University and a close observer of the case, said he believes third-party liability is a major part of the defense. Under that theory, Duke maintains that any wrongdoing was caused by Crystal Mangum and Nifong two people not connected to Duke in any way.
"What they're claiming is that what they did was what they would normally do when confronted with this kind of situation and provided the information that was truthful as best they could provide it to these young men and did not do anything to harm them,"

Notice how this story that has a byline dated today fails to even mention in the most minute way that Magnum is now charged with murder. And once again WRAL post a story short on facts but always inclusive of some excuse to cover Duke’s butt (3rd party responsibility). Duke and it’s faculty all but charged this guys with guilt, denied publicly any evidence that showed Magnum as anything but a victim while ignoring her felonious past.
I sure as heck remember many on this forum and others stating that after she was essentially given a complete pass that she would never be held to account and thus don’t be surprised if in the future she ends up killing someone. What a shame to be so right.
Duke not only killed the lacrosse program and ended these players scholarships....Duke’s faculty (Duke employees) landered these players and used racist remarks against them.
Duke and its employees are not a third party....they are actually one of the parties involved.
If so, that should be evidence enough making Duke Univ. partly responsible for the fire-storm.
I think their were 88 and to my knowledge not one was ever held accountable. I would say it’s time for Duke and the 88 buttholes to pay up.
The Infamous Duke 88, and they should be sued to their last cent.
Duke is no better than Crystal Magnum, the two are the same and in the same profession.
At Duke you are guilty until you can prove your innocence?
In the past Duke has been a prestigious school ( Expensive ).
Duke's actions toward the players and the program now will have consequences. It is time for Duke to pay for their mistakes.
However, the Gang of 88 Duke faculty members who libeled the students on campus in my opinion makes Duke part of the suit. I hope the 88 faculty get their pockets emptied and Duke gets it too. I understood that Duke had already paid some settlements.
She is up for murder? I know she was in serious trouble with the law - AGAIN.
The Duke lacrosse players may not have been rapists, but they weren’t exactly angels either. The rented house where the stripper party took place was infamous for its late night parties that drove the neighbors crazy. And some of the Duke players that night spewed some nasty racial comments. A lot of them were rich, spoiled jerks who I wouldn’t want living anywhere near me— then or now.
Here is an interesting article on how many of the 88 Duke University professors have moved on to spread their Marxist hate of “White Male Privilege” to other fine institutions of higher learning:

“The Duke lacrosse players may not have been rapists, but they werent exactly angels either.”
Neither were the Scottsboro boys. That didn’t make them any less the victims of a lynch mob.
“The rented house where the stripper party took place was infamous for its late night parties that drove the neighbors crazy.”
They had only had that house for about a month. The “party” was recompense for missing spring break (they had to stay on campus to practice). It was a dull party, some of those—including two of those ultimately indicted—hadn’t even wanted to go; and many (including two of those indicted) didn’t even know there were to be strippers until they were asked to contribute to their fees.
” And some of the Duke players that night spewed some nasty racial comments.”
Only one remark was made—not by any of those accused—after the second dancer (who had just ripped them off for their money) derided them as “little dick white boys”,
and one of them, trying to respond in kind, answered with a line from an AA comedian, “Thank your granpa for my nice cotten shirt.”
The rest of the assertions about nasty racial language were simply tools to raise racial animus in the community; which succeeded, so that Nifong went from being 20 points behind in the polls to winning (with about 98% of the black vote) all on the strength of that case.
“A lot of them were rich, spoiled jerks who I wouldnt want living anywhere near me then or now.”
Some of them were on scholarship—from families which were first responders on 911. Seligmann’s father was raised by a black family. Finnerty’s family was so poor his father had to borrow for an engagement ring; when he made his fortune, he built a hospital in Africa and spent a lot on black education.
They were not stereotypes. But the storyline sounded better if they could be portrayed that way.
These men were not merely “failed to be convicted” of the crimes they were charged with.
They were adjudicated innocent of all charges, and wrongly prosecuted.
Why does that piss you off?
Because they were white and “rich”?
Tell us the truth, do you also have a “Free Mumia” sticker on your car?
One of the 88 lives with his same sex "significant other." They adopted a boy, a black toddler. He was caught in a sting when he offered to "share" the child with other perverts in exchange for access to their children.
I'm sure other 87 are just as charming.
Class envy is not attractive.
You should read more about this case.
There's no doubt that they behaved like scum. However, several players who did not attend the party were flunked by some of those 88 teachers, even though they maintained 85+ percent averages.
Those that attended weren't saints; but they didn't deserve to be falsly accused of a particularly disgusting crime. Afterall, we can't simply lock up idiotic buffoons for the fact that they're idiotic buffoons. We'd have no liberals left!
that is a lot of Brownie Winklers
