Libertarian-leaning Texas Republican Congressman Ron Paul has formed a so-called "testing the waters" fundraising account ahead of a possible 2012 presidential run, Paul aide Jesse Benton confirmed to CBS News.
According to Benton, Paul "is close to making a final decision and it is better than 50-50 that he will enter the race in May."
A run by Ron Paul would almost surely mean that his son, GOP Sen. Rand Paul, will not seek the presidency. Rand Paul, who shares many political beliefs with Ron Paul, has been considering a run if his father does not seek the nomination.
Benton said that Ron Paul has already raised more than $1.2 million through his political action committee "to help him weigh his political options," adding that "he has the structure in place to hit the ground running if he makes the decision to run next month." Benton is the director of Paul's political action committee, LibertyPAC.

Zzzzzzzzz.
He’s so old now, that might be the only sound coming from him at the debates!
What is this LOONEY-TUNE’S problem? He has no chance in Hades...and all he does is stir up his kooky dope-smoking Paultard supporters.
Including the imbeciles here who support this id-jit.
He’s a “Payday.”
Corporate welfare sycophants attack!!!
You old ‘truther’ fool. Go away.
(Paul not Free ThinkerNY}
Cool it will give me something to do to get away from the RinoRat embarrassment.
Paul/Ventura.
Slogan: Total boobs for a time such as this.
As a Republican fine, he’ll be crushed in the primaries no crime, no foul.
I hope he doesn’t run as a spoilsport independent and hand the election to Obama like Perot would though.
Ron Paul won’t win but who does it help? It helps Romney, Huckabee, Trump and other moderate/RINO types. Paul’s presence will draw 5% of the vote that would otherwise choose the most conservative candidate running. Perhaps enough to give a margin of victory to one of the moderates over a Bachman type.
The Ernest T. Bass of the Republican Party. Pesty little gnat you can never shed yourself from.
Ron Paul won’t make it to the promised land but debates need a prophet objecting to money spent outside our borders for dictator demise and nation building while other candidates try to outdo each other how much much they will cut nation building in the USA.
My two brothers are huge liberaltarian RP supporters and they always talk about how great he is. My response to that is if Ron Paul is so great, if he truly is the politican of our time and the one to lead this country, then why can he never get more than 5 percent of the vote? They never have an answer to that one, just like my other question I always ask, “Who’s your favorite Liberaltarian president?”
Looks like Ron Paul might have to fight Donald Trump to determine who’s going to play Ross Perot the Independent Spoiler this time.
In fact, we have a whole bunch of midget idiots dying to run again, since there’s really no one competent in charge of the Stupid Party to tell them not to.
Yep. Another destructive vanity run.
It has nothing to do with that....(but I suspect you know that, too.)
Here’s the problem with the Doc:
A.) He’s a “truther”
B.) He refuses to see who the enemy really is and refuses to deal with them the way they need dealt with, (and no - its not by issuing quaint 18th Century Letters of Marque.)
C.) His supporters are a cavalcade of kooks, nuts, dope smokers, tinfoil-hat-wearing conspiracy theorists, anarchists, and uncouth poll-hijacking loudmouths who haven’t learned how to function in polite society, (i.e. NOT gentlemen.)
He can go pound salt, and it’ll be a happy day if/when JimRob ever gets rid of all the Paultards that infest FR.
And Obama is just sitting back and smiling, knowing that the mega-idiots who would challenge him with the green party vote like Nader is meaningless.
