PHOENIX (AP) -- An examination in Arizona's Maricopa County has found that the sheriff's office, widely known for efforts against illegal immigrants, inappropriately spent $99 million from two jail funds over the last eight years to pay for other law enforcement operations - including immigration patrols.
The $99 million figure released Wednesday is an update to an estimate made in September by budget officials who said the sheriff's office was believed to have used $60 million and $80 million over four or five years from a jail tax on other purposes.

This is total bs.
I hope he runs for Senate.
The source is the U.S. attorney's office in Arizona. That would be one Dennis K. Burke, nominated by President Obama in July 2009, before which time he was a Senior Advisor to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. And now he works for Eric Holder.
Of course. Go to the very end of the article.
In an interview, Stapley said he believed Arpaio's office opened an investigation of him a few years ago when Stapley started asking questions about the costs of the sheriff's immigration efforts and junkets taken by sheriff's officials.
Arpaio had been embroiled in nasty years long legal disputes with county officials and judges.
Investigations by the sheriff's office resulted in charges against Wilcox and Stapley, but those cases were thrown out after a judge ruled that the county's then-top prosecutor had a conflict of interest in pressing the case against Wilcox. The decision led to the dismissal of Stapley's charges.
Wilcox was accused of voting on contracts involving a Hispanic advocacy group that had given her loans and never filing conflict-of-interest statements.
Stapley was accused of getting mortgage loans under fraudulent pretenses and allegedly misusing campaign funds he raised to run for president of a national association of county officials.
So the "Hispanic advocacy group(e)" runs to the feds which are MORE that happy to consider the info as clean and unbiased.
And that "advocacy group" thing?
here ya go...

A Maricopa County grand jury on Monday handed up a new indictment against County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox, adding six new counts to charges that were originally filed in early December.
Wilcox is now accused of 42 criminal counts, including perjury, conflict of interest, forgery and false swearing, alleging that between 2002 and 2005 she voted to give funds to the Latino advocacy group Chicanos por la Causa while she had an active loan from one of its subsidiaries.
The first indictment, handed up Dec. 9, included 36 counts. The six new charges, alleging conflict of interest, are also related to Wilcox's supposed failure to disclose her relationship with Chicanos por la Causa.
And what is that hispanic group all about? According to their own website...

And Sheriff Joe is the bad guy here? Because WILCOX and STAPLEY said so?
Wilcox was accused of voting on contracts involving a Hispanic advocacy group that had given her loans and never filing conflict-of-interest statements.
Stapley was accused of getting mortgage loans under fraudulent pretenses and allegedly misusing campaign funds he raised to run for president of a national association of county officials.
.
Wow, now that’s the way to get my attention - so cute. Well done. :)
Exactly. If his office is given money, shouldn’t he have discretion on what to spend it on? The report doesn’t say he spent it on strippers or dog sweaters. The money was spent on law enforcement matters.
He spent money designated for law enforcement on .......law enforcement??
Hasn’t he ever heard of hookers and blow?
Mary Rose had a nice little “register to vote and get pizza” drive that was FOR HISPANICS ONLY. They had security at the door. The only “whites” allowed were Terry Goddard’s (three time loser at running for Gov) staff. Those who didn’t register, didn’t get pizza. 2010 gov run against Jan Brewer.
Mary Rose is also, along with her husband Earl (another public servant bottom feeder) is also being investigated for fraud re: boxing commission/ forged check. But the Arizona Republic loves her and the other “open borders” crowd.
It’s not like that in Texas. The County Commisioners earmark every dollar in the Sheriff’s budget. So much for the jail, so much for this drug program, this much to pay the deputies, this much for vehicles, etc etc. For a good time you can always go to Commisioner’s Court when the Sheriff is asking for overtime money to pay for a high profile investigation or the like. It can turn into a screaming match in the blink of an eye.
Obama is having is pound of flesh
Amen, brother.
