Conservative politicians have to learn how to do this; perhaps they should study greate comedians, who also need that skill. They have to learn how to say a few quick words that turn the whole audience against the heckler or make them laugh at the heckler; preferably both.

One has to be able to logically turn the tables, be sarcastic and at least formally polite at the same time, and be quick about it.

Good point and not a skill all politicians develop. For example, I can’t see McCain or Kerry ever handling a heckler well.

Unfortunately, the sharp wit that allows for a quick response to a heckler is not something one can learn. It's really a God-given talent. You either have that ability or you don't. Can't learn it.
