RIKUZENTAKATA, Iwate Pref. (Kyodo) Survivors of last month's tsunami began moving into temporary housing Saturday in Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture, becoming the first Tohoku disaster evacuees to do so.

The new residents of 36 prefabricated units built on the grounds of a junior high school brought their belongings from the shelters after winning a highly competitive lottery involving 1,160 groups of applicants last week.

Eiki Kumagai, 43, expressed delight at moving into a unit together with his wife and their two children. "I'm happy. . . . My next step will be to look for a job," he said. He used to run an "izakaya" pub, but it was washed away by the massive tsunami following the March 11 earthquake.

The Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectural governments hope to build temporary units for 62,000 households but construction had only started on 4,337 units as of Thursday, officials said. About 150,000 people are still staying at some 2,400 shelters in 18 prefectures.

The number of those moving into units may seem low, but considering it's been a month of constant shaking and rolling, over 4000 units already started is really great news.

These are crazy people who made the video, right?
Such devastation, so sad.
They should have taken biscuits for the dogs.
