You’re kidding, right? [Andy McCarthy on the budget deal]
NRO Corner ^ | April 9, 2011 | Andrew McCarthy

Posted on 04/09/2011 9:14:39 AM PDT by Al B.

With due respect, I think those who are praising the budget deal are deluding themselves. Under circumstances where we are trillions of dollars in debt, the GOP just caved on its promise to cut the relative pittance of $61 billion in spending because it’s just not worth fighting for more than the half-pittance of $40 billion Democrats claimed was their drop-dead number. “Drop dead” meant daring Republicans to shut the government down (which, as we know, doesn’t actually shut the government down). The Republicans blinked.

For me, this is no surprise — as I’ve said several times (see, e.g., here and here), I don’t think they’re serious. But I want to make a point about how strange this praise of Boehner & Co. is. A mere four months ago, the big controversy in conservative and Republican circles was whether the GOP had reneged on their vaunted pledge to cut $100B in spending in the current fiscal year because they had seemingly come down to $61B. As I noted at the time, there was no question that, if you looked at the fine print of the pledge, the commitment was $61B — but that if you looked at reality, both $61B and $100B were laughably unserious. No matter. Folks around here pooh-poohed my criticism and insisted that a $61B pledge was a sober first step, showing real fortitude about getting our fiscal house in order.

So now they’ve stopped short, significantly short, of that purportedly serious step, and the reaction is, “We won!” You’ve got to be kidding me.

And there are some in FR that think these same “leaders” are going work hard and Push Ryan’s cuts? PAAHHLLEEAASSEE!

Exactly..and when they cave they will say that they can not do anything unless they have the Senate and White House. .

We need a serious 3rd party to save the nation ..

I am with you....as long as they keep chipping away with each bill. If they can get the Dems to make more concessions with the debt limit vote, and then maybe one or two stand alone bills to cut or combine replicated programs, I would be relatively satisfied.

I do think their strategy in these first few months is less than desired, but they are mostly going to be trimming around the edges until there is at least a GOP senate majority, and setting the stage for more pickups in 2012.

It wasn't the amount in question... we all know this is just a CR and the 100 billion pledge was BS to begin with... it was the riders that they caved on. If they can't stand up to protect the most innocent Americans amongst us... those that are guaranteed the right to life... THE UNBORN... then they are worthless. They have no one with the balls or talent in their elected members, to argue and promote the truth about why they are doing what they are trying to do. hoyer destroyed the majority whip on fox two days ago... made the republican look dumb, ignorant and scared... left the idiot speechless... incapable of stringing together a sentence. 85% of all elected republicans deserve unemployment. 100% of dims deserve unemployment.

Cavuto and the boys had fun with it. Unfortunately, FNC has now gone over to the serious side and is interviewing those distressed cherry blossom tourists who stayed up all night praying for a “deal” so it would not be canceled. According to FNC, the monuments in the District of Corruption are now experiencing “historical” record-breaking lines. Man, the bull**** just can’t get any deeper. Those wascally TEA Partiers came close to destroying a beautiful April morning.

I imagine the Ryan budget is well supported by the leadership, as he reports to them. I think they are gearing up to expend more on the full budget for next year than this half measure. As with any budget, there is going to be compromise between houses, but I am sure they are going to stick to their guns on certain parts, and use the rest in the 2012 election.

We did all the heavy lifting; got all these people elected, and then wussies like Boehner and McConnell once again demand that we bend over, take it, and say thank you!

There are some days, I just don’t have the stomach to deal with this sh*t.

Sarah, please announce that you’re running!

You will though... even Levin says that Ryan's plan will go nowhere. The dims will play the same card and the pu$$ies in the republican party will cave and cower as they have done this time. We will not get anything done, until Conservatives hold the House, Senate and White House... and we have purged enough rinos so that the dims are powerless. We have a lot of hard work ahead of us. America may fail anyway... I will go down fighting and wearing my boots.

Looks like yet another example of "we let 'em slide this time, but just you wait -- we'll really get 'em next time."

Exactly. Crybaby Boehner should be working for the UN.

The dems rammed healthcare down our throats. Why can’t we cram something down their throats. And I don’t want to hear about “1/2 of 1/3 of the government”. The GOP were as bad as the dems when the GOP had 3/3 of 3/3 of the government.

Sorry friend, but chipping won’t cut it anymore! We are broke...we don’t have the option to chip anymore!

Boehner needed to show strength and conviction while the wind was at his back, and public support was strong. This move has effectively made pushing Ryan’s cuts (Mostly Entitlements) that much harder. It’s also emboldened the Democrats. Oh, and make NO mistake, they will spin this to their atvantage. We’ll be playing defense, while they’re on offense.

Make NO mistake, if Boehner caved on this, he’ll cave on Ryans proposal.

Rose colored glasses and Kool-Aid...what a combo!

With this budget deal, we are like the family on financial brink that, after much consternation and bickering has finally decided to reduce their Netflix account to one movie at a time from three.

This is gonna leave a mark.

The Republican leadership is even more pathetic than I expected. I thought they would cave after a day or two of being beaten up when the government shut down. I didn't know they would actually treat a shutdown like a disaster that they caused and work to avoid it at all costs. That gave the Dems leverage that they didn't deserve to have. The House has the leverage, but refuses to use it. Obama loves government. There is no government unless you do what the House says. THAT is leverage.

Bunch of pansies. I hope the freshmen start to join forces to find someone with a pair to lead them.

My fiancee’ went to the Post Office in Lilburn, GA this morning to post some mail and there is a sign on the door that says thanks to the Legislative compromise last night we are open today. We are just flabbergasted. Can you say Union?

I cannot say this enough: Voting in the republicans last year (or even if it had happened in 2008) is like voting in a new crew on the Titanic AFTER it hit the iceberg.

The ship is going down and the crew may have a small impact on how the lifeboats are manned, but there are still NOT enough lifeboats. I’m making one for my family from the deck chairs. To all: If you really expect to survive this, I suggest you do the same. It will not be pretty. Watch “Victory at Sea” to get a bit of a feel - but I suspect it will be much worse than that.

FOX has definitely jumped the shark and gone over to the Dark Side. IMHO. I don’t watch them much anymore. Mainly just Cavuto and Dobbs.

The mammoth problem is the medias, they are on the side of the liberals and this is true for years, maybe always, and it does make a huge difference.

Republicans mostly remain well mannered, they do not distort, or call names, and get ugly, and we all know the democrats do all of these with impunity. God help us. While I do not believe all conservatives are moral or without corruption, I do see that they attempt to take the higher ground and act more like Christians are expected, supposed to act.

Of course it doesn't work or hasn't. We are not repentant and God is not pleased with what is. Light and darkness do not mix. Where there is light there is no darkness. Light can overcome darkness. Darkness can not overcome light.

2 Chronicles 7:13-14 (New King James Version)

13 When I shut up heaven and there is no rain, or command the locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence among My people,

14 if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
